I'm making a online folio for myself. Do you think its really necessary to brand yourself or do think its ok to be really understated and let your work do the talking.

I gave myself a horeshoe tatoo once. You know, where you get a clipper lighter and light it upside down for 5 minutes and then stick the hot end into your arm. It helps if your a bit pished.

If you are starting a business/consultancy/studio/etc and it happens to be named after you, then brand it...
...if you are just creating a folio to get work for yourself, DO NOT BRAND YOURSELF. Let the work stand for itself, and remember don't overdo the folio. It is there to show the work in the best light and should not compete with the work.

A little tip: Often with branding, what people are actually doing when they think they're attempting branding, is actually positioning.
The second half of ivan_cook's message speaks to positioning:
I am capable of doing...
I have built my skills doing...
I have expertise in...
I am the right person because...
etc.

we used to live out in the hillbilly country nextdoor to an old guy called leroy. the first time my mom met him, he was out in the fields branding and castrating some cattle. she hiked out into the pasture to introduce herself (neighbourly, like) and he turned round to her, a bowie knife between his teeth, blood trickling out one side of his mouth down into his zz top beard, tobacco juice trickling out the other and brandished a red-hot iron at her, saying round the knife, 'so, where do you want it?'
class.
