I help run the punk rock music community in Arizona. We have a great local scene out here. Though we do have our douchebag ego driven cock suckers, a majority of the bands and people involved are great and really easy to get along with.
I'm curious to what your local music community is like, be it punk, hip hop, folk, country, jazz... whatever?

around here everyone knows everyone, and is generally a very positive vibe.
made a ton of friends/cool acquiantences through the local scene.
less of an emphasis on original music at area bars/clubs, which is a real drag, but plenty of people writing, recording and swapping mp3s.

I try to stick to small venues and bars with live djs spinning hip hop and jazz inspired beats and breaks.

awesome. where are you guys from?
- kyl30
oakland/sf
there used to be alot of clubs/live music venues but many have fallen to development. Still quite a few but less than back in the day.

80s cock rock. Poison, white snake that type of shit.
I live in Thunder Bay. They are a little behind. ---or are they?

west/central pennsylvania.
• lots and lots of blue-collar rock-n-roll.
• a surprizingly well-respected death metal community.
• with the crowd about 10-15 years my junior, a nice underground punk scene.

With Chicago being the third largest city in the US, you'd think there would be clubs galore with tons of bands playing constantly that are worth seeing.
However, there are really only about 6-8 venues that bands really shoot for playing at, ones where you feel like it's a show, and not just you having a place to play in a bar. Good bands can be found anywhere, but you typically know certain venues and they types of bands they usually have.
In the building my band practices in, you hear tons of nu-metal, disgusting stuff IMO and I constantly wonder where they even get shows. My bandmates have said on the South Side of Chicago, there are tons of bars that cater to that kind of crowd. But you won't dare find it on the north side of town where venues I mentioned above are located.
What's cool, though, is that in a city of around 3 million people, going to shows is one of the things that make the city not seem so big. Sometimes you feel like you see the same people at different venues all across town. Maybe people just have a certain look about them.
Music-wise, the indie thing is and has always been alive and kicking here. There are also quite a bit of open-mic acoustic type things here, which is how I got my start and met friends and people I play music with. In fact now I'm trying to steer myself back to doing solo acoustic stuff when I have the time because I'm really missing it.
I've also not really sought out good jazz in the city, but have heard there's lots of good stuff to find in various bars.

I pretty much owe everything in my life right now to the Denver punk rock scene. Its how I first got involved in music, design, and made the greatest friends in the world.
Suburban Home Records does a lot here to keep things going strong:
http://www.suburbanhomerecords.c…Hey Mr740 do you know the Stereotyperider guys in Phoenix? I've done a couple websites from them in the past. They're great guys.

bloomington is pretty unique as most indie shows will have different acts... like last saturday was a hip hop band with a metal band and a arty keyboard shit band.
louisville is almost all hardcore right now with a few '77 style punk bands and very little hip hop

sklassen, yea I know those guys. Anthony and Dave are actually playing in a new band called The Revenge with Dave from Sam the Butcher on vocals.

Was friends with Tom Yount, lost touch. Last someone said, he was drumming for Jedi 5. Just looked around and saw he quit.
Do you know who Iam talkong about?
- sklassen0
chip moved to denver a little while back. he started a band with some others from here called love me destroyer that he quit a bit ago. he's just getting a new band together called sound of sinners...
- mr7400
hmm... I didn't know Tom. I'll bet there's someone out here who would know.
I started a thread on my site. Keep an eye on it, someone out here's bound to know.
