nice concepts. i like the look of the 2nd onf since it's cleaner looking, but i think the first one does a better job of conveying the flying-away feeling which is what i assume you're going for.

only looks like a shadow because its darker/filled (+ the gradient may have slightly something to do with how you look at it - e.g. with the light src - and the gradient is correct in the 2nd if u were to see it as a "shadow")...
i wouldnt think of it as a shadow tho in the 2nd and more of a 2nd wing, like many have said
just my input.... :P

I'd like to see a third design thats like the first concept but the points meet at the front like the second concept.
That would be the best of both in my humble opinion. Nice Job though.
