'yea, but not an openly delcared war with the states. ...that could have gotten messy?'
true enough but strategically as a general, you want to win the war. also korea was already divided by commie and democrat before the war. after the japanese occupation, in similar fashion as germany, korea was divded in to north and south before the korean war. in support by the USSR and china, north korea attacked south korea. 1950 June 25th.
"i suppose the powers that be in the us wanted southest asia to be similar to europe. half free, half commie. ...seems to have been a good idea, as we avioded any nuclear exchanges in the cold war."
unlike germany or other divded country from the spoils of the WW2, as an independent gov, north korea decided to attack. the war came at a stalemate as MacAthur's intension about bombing china, where all the chienses troops came from alarmed US gov and decided to pull him out of the campaign. the war continued on until stalemate came around near 38th parellel as it was set up previously to the war. there was cease fire agreement set which meant that the war was not over in any terms. if you are from northkorea, you grow to learn that US is going to attack any minute and south koreans are taught to fear north korean invasion at any given time.
my childhood, i remember living in south korea and its air raid practice every month. and learning to how to survive chemical attacks and learning how to use a rifle. as a korean male, you are mandated to serve in the military for few years at least. yeap, i certainly feel very different about this topic since i am korean and being growing up in the police state.

if a unified korea
becomes reality
I suspect the people of NK

when exposed to the outside world.

good point unfittedpoint
i remember reading an article about comments from NK officials. where they were afraid of what the truth could do to the people. NK are thought to believer that Kim Jung Il and Kim Il Sung are gods. also they have fortified the whole country in to militay fortress that it would take about 50 years to demilitarize it.
it cant be like germany. only way that it can happen is if it is very slow transition over few decades.
also there will be economic aspects of SK supporting the NK. on the social aspect of it, the military of NK will disperse in to one of the most dangerous gangs and arms traders as in happened in USSR. it would very dangerous since, NK military is the best trained miliary personel in the world. the unit death ratio is 1 to 20. where as Special Ops in US is 1 to 6.
