I'm not sure if there are people here that use this but I would like some help on what would be the best resolution to work on for a widscreen type project.
This DVD will only be seen in a flat screen TV.
I have tried a few resolutions but I can't get the type on the menu look as sharp as In photoshop / Aeffects.
Any thoughts on this?Thanks!

Arriba!

16x9 for the flatscreen.. but you will be limited to SD, due to the DVD.
unless you want to make a flash projector with video in it, with the text on top, rendered...

Ignore what derek said about 16:9 thats a canvas ratio and has little if anything to do with resolution.
Your best bet is to look at your encoding settings and make sure you are at best resolution, I am working in studio pro tomorrow so I could email you a couple of tips then if you like not sure how urgent you are needing help.
- Meeklo0
thanks derek!
yes yes..
SD, that is no problem. The reason Im asking is because I want to get the best quality (inside SD).
I'm about to do some experiments, in
1280x720
723x407
850x475
864x480
1152x648I know DVD studio streches the image, wich one should I go for?
- Meeklo0
Chossy, yes
I know about the canvas ratio, but you are right, I was asking more regarding resolution.
Any tips?
thanks again!

well i am working in studio pro right now, and have been using since version 1. so anway...
SD footage is always gonna like kinda shitty on a huge monitor like you have... (is it plasma?)
the best bet would be to drive the presentation/kiosk from a computer with a monitor connection going out, and putting it together in flash... this wil be the highest res...
DVDs are Standard Def, whereas the flash movie can be 1080i or 720i
- derek20050
meeko, what are you using to encode?
- derek20050
aww fuck, sorry... "Meeklo"

Flash is not an option anymore, It has to be a DVD format.
I will export from after effects, with no compresion, but then import in DVD studio, so whatever DVD does.
My main concern, is at what pixel resolution should I design the menues in photoshop.
- derek20050
like, are you using footage you edited from FCP or something? i would spit it outta there at 10 bit uncompressed... and into compressor...
- chossy0
*sigh
- derek20050
oh its all outta aftereffects?
you could do it all in HD in aftereffects (1080i or 720i) and then encode it in DVD studio pro, or compressor...
i would recommed compressor, as you have much more control... you can add compression markers and whatnot, to tell where fade to blacks are etc...
in the end, its going to be 720x486 at 4:3...
you could just create the whole thing at that resolution....photoshop menu, the aftereffects stage, etc...

Derek,
there is no Video on the project.Again, I'm only interested on the menu resolution, not compression or how to export, I have that down already :)
An example.
DVD Video uses a frame dimension of 720 x 480 (in 4:3) so the menu needs to be designed in 720 x 534, because of the pixel ratio difference from computer vs TV.
So my question again is, what resolution should I make the menu if I want the DVD to be widescreen and I don't want it to appear stretched out.
Any thoughts?

from the help:
NTSC 4:3 720 x 534 pixels converted to 720 x 480 pixels
NTSC 16:9 864 x 480 pixels converted to 720 x 480 pixels
PAL 4:3 768 x 576 pixels converted to 720 x 576 pixels
PAL 16:9 1024 x 576 pixels converted to 720 x 576 pixels
DVD Studio Pro will automatically rescale graphics that use the starting dimensions above. (Graphics that already use the rescale dimensions are imported without any rescaling.) If you rescale the graphics in your graphics program, they will appear distorted in the graphics program, but will be correct when viewed in DVD Studio Pro as rectangular pixels.

72dpi

Derek:
864x480
I think that was the answer, (I have a book on DVD studio and it says another number, but is not working well, I will burn a DVD now, with different sizes and Will add that one, too.
Thanks everyone for the help!!!!
I hope it works now
- derek20050
yea, square pixel vs. rectangular pixel...
i usually just set the template in photoshop for widescreen DV
but... you could make a menu at 960x540 for 16x9 and then export and resize them to 960x480 to get them to look right, (the square pixel view will look squeezed, until the rectangular pixel view blows it back out....)
- derek20050
cool.
- eficks0
dude, just use the DV PAL/NTSC Widescreen preset when creating a new file in Photoshop. Thats if you have a newish version.
- Meeklo0
Ok,
Im about to burn my first test
But, when I'm using the simulator format, all of the sizes I'm using are cropped, unless I set the menu back to 4:3 (in that case I can see it correctly but it adds a grey bar at the top and bottom, I would like it to be black or no bars at all)
Is this a mistake of the simulator or am I going to see the menues cropped?
