I like to piss around in blender from time to time. Coming from 3ds Max, you won't know what the hell is going on. It doesn't take too long to get up to speed though. It's a great tool, and it's free.
- I was turned off by the steep learning curve. I guess I need to think different for blender. The UI bugs the crap out of me, especially with the mouse.monospaced

i use it all te time... think its a superb alternative to the other 3d progs... and its has the potential to do excellent work with.... the new internal render engine - cycles- is nice too..... lots of tutorials, super friendly community....

Blender is fantastic now. They've ditched the old weirdo interface and added a ton of amazing features for a free software. For any solo practitioner that just wants a bit of 3d in their workflow, I'd take a hard look at it before shelling out for Maya or Max.
Just a quick breakdown: super easy, well integrated physically based renderer (like vray/arnold/etc), sculpting workflow, node based compositor, video editor, internal game engine. All really high quality, stable and just all around really impressive.

I had little experience of 3D a couple of years back. Downloaded this and played around - didn't get far but got some elements for a video I was working on. Have to say it was a great piece of software (hard to believe its free). I really wanted to get into it more but I am getting old and learning new software every eve isn't a priority for me now. This thread has reminded me to open it up again.
