I think that in this case, this person being "web savvy" means that they knew of and wanted to use Flash as opposed to "boring" HTML.
Some stereotypes will never ever die.

or photoshop a google page with his site being #1, print it out and stick it on his screen by using spraymount, flip a bird, walk out, have a coffee.

(Sep 8 05, 12:17)best idea yet.

Did he bring up search engines etc before you began work on the site? if so then it's kind of your fault!
- Crouwel0
that is why i never use flash.
my 2c.

Of course we talked about search engines, but the expectations he has now doesn't match the ones he had then.
if you type in his store's name (not too unique) it is third. but if you type in "wolverine statue" his store doesn't show up...i never said it would and it never came up.

"my site isnt getting any hits, so i'm taking it down so no one will ever have a chance at finding our site."
//seems rational
i'm in the same boat as you. i just put up a coming soon page with some info for a record label site i'm working on. 2 days later the fuckwad calls me and is asking why the site isn't showing up in search engines then tries to inform me about meta tags. all i could do was shake my head.
tell the guy to drop the 300 bucks and submit his site to the yahoo business page.

Google tends to ignore meta tags. With a flash site, noembed and noscript tags with alternative text content can help a lot.

I can't help but snicker, but are you talking about little models of charecters from comic books?
Those aren't statues! They're figurines!!
I have a bona-fide statue, my friend. It stood in my living room until I moved last week, and now it's on loan to a friend who has the room for him.
Behold, Mr. Sinstro!
Yep, that's a man's garbage and everything right there in the center of the picture.
- skelly0
wtf is that and why is he going for the Venus de Milo look?
- kyl30
What if the content is in an xml doc? Will the search engines see it?

Most (and I do not mean all) comic book shop owners/artists not only think they are better than everyone else, but they think they know everything. I have come across many comic book illustrators who think they can design and set type (when in actuality, they don't know shit).
But back to the subject...
They can't expect the web site to be their only source of advertisement. There are so many resources they can tap into in terms of promoting their business. The web site should be a suplement - another way for a potential consumer to learn more about the business.
Don't let the business put all of the blame on you. You did the site a year ago. They shouldn't be giving you shit, (especially when they payed you peanuts to do it).
Anyways, if they did it themselves, it would probably look really bad!

This is not a new issue and should be a lesson learned. What business client does not want to utilize search engines?
Why don't you just explain to him that the original scope didn't include SEO and you'd be happy to give him a new quote?

It is unfornate when clients fail to understand one product can't answer all the worlds problems. It's especially unfornate that the client wasn't aware of the pros and cons of having a flash site. I'm sorry you're having to go through this.
I'd just explain to him why this happens with flash sites, and offer to make an html version of the same site for a reasonable price.
OR
I'd tell him, that's fine i understand your reason. Thanks for letting me know, best of luck in the future.
- PaulWall0
Cant you make an html version? Do it in a day. Do it drunk.
- PaulWall0
Make a link to LoFi and HiFI and thats all u gonna do.
- skelly0
but he said this guy expects his website to show up on a search for something as generic as "statues"
he said a search for the business name already brings it up fine.
would an HTML site make this comic book company one of the first results for "statues" on any search engine? i don't think so.
sounds like he just needs to get with reality.
- PaulWall0
Tell him that in a professional way. If he doesnt understand and you dont wanna do it, thats all you can do.
- mg330
The client is a grade A moron.
Tweak his nipple a bit (yah, really, with your thumb and finger) and give him a kiss.
- kyl30
regardless you're not responsible for the work . so what if he wants to take down the site, let him. It might hurt your feelings a litle but don't sweat it. Just put an archived version on your site and move on.
