food and water are exceptionally low... thousands of homes are obviously gone...
... I got a buddy going to med school down there - she was all worried that this hurricane would kick her out of her house - because New Orleans is like a big drainage basin - all the water just flows right in...
... fuck... i'm all worried.
Redcross donations? anyone got any links for collections to help this out?

Of course I'm worried about people losing their lives and all, but what about all those fantastic old houses in the French Quarter?

Why build a city below sea level? What did they expect?
- ********0
There are plenty of cities below sea-level in the world, but that doesn't mean they lie on a Hurricane Belt.
- stewart0
over 25% of the Netherlands is below sea level.
with bigger cities as Amsterdam, Den Haag, Rotterdam, Lutjebroek...
crazy.

fuller... dumb comment.
as noted by some other NT'ers - lots of the world is below sea level as far a domestic society goes...
... New Orleans etc... these towns have been around a couple hundred years at least... and are established cities - I don't think when early Americans were settling cities that they were really concerned with their sea-level location... they were more concerned about going up and down the Mississippi... open trade roots.
- fullerc0
they just didn't whip out their GPS units and look up the sea level????
IT'S UNDER SEA LEVEL!!!! YOU KNOW WHERE IT'S GOING TO BE IN A 100 YEARS?? UNDER SEA LEVEL??? YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS IT'S UNDER WATER! OH OHH!!! OHHH!!!!!! OHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
*said in my best Sam Kinison accent.

Fella's, easy. Obviously human endeavors have pushed the sea back down there. The US Army Corps of Engineers are mostly responsible for created this. Before this time, the coastline was much further back. Don't forget that a ton of sediment gets dumped into the Mississippi Delta each year there. It's mostly in response to that as I remember.

It's not looking good down there at all. I really feel for those people out there. I have a few friends out there who I hope I can get in contact with in the next few days. What a shitty situation to be in.

the effoert to to fix the breeched levey on lake pontchartrain has been abandoned. ...remaining pumps are expected to fail. ...the water is expected to rise another 15'. nolo is under mandatory evacuation. basically the city is lost.
