Trying to get a smooth gradient - lt grey to dark - in photoshop - but it keeps banding. never had a problem with this before.
Anyone know what's up?

define "banding"

(Oh, my GF said I could go to Breck, not like I had to ask, but I warned her that I might not come back to Chicago...happy...)

what they said and make sure you're viewing at 100%... sometimes my monitor shows banding at smaller zooms

yah, see what you mean. strange.
Maybe try changing the size of the gradient - like shortening it when you lay it down.

I've tried everything...this is fucken weird...never happened before....

i think it depends on the colors being used and the amount of steps to get to the alternate color. you might want to try adding slight color to the grey or making the light darker or the dark lighter. if it's a photoshop gradient you can eliminate banding by going into separate color channels and adding small amounts of noise.
hope this helps.

cheers mitsurugi...I've never had to do that before though.
It's stumping me why this is happening now all of a sudden....

Upond futher investigation it looks like it is a problem with teh greys. Colour gradients don't do it.

Um... it looks fine to me... did you somehow knock your computers system colours down (like, sub 16bit... thousands of colours instead of millions... or something?)
- jevad0
no I didn't james - checked all that. Are you looking at it on PC or mac?

Ok, upon closer inspection, it is a bit bandy I guess... I took it into photoshop, and redrew the gradient identical with dither switched off.... re-tick your dither mate, and its super-smooth :)
- jevad0
I tried that!!!!

Bugger! Serious, I totally got the same gradient as yours by turning dither off. When I switched it back on, it was perfect.
Weird.
Is your doc regular RGB (not CMYK or indexed colour or anything like that) ?
