I woke up this morning... went to the computer to checked up on the usual stuff (email, cnn, etc.). about an hour or 2 into it Safari crashes.
I think -no problem, it happens once in a while-. So I go to start it up again and it doesn't do anything ("Application Not Responding" over and over again, the window doesn't even come up). I'm using Firefox right now and it seems to be the only thing working.
About 1/2 of the things in System Preferences don't even come up when clicked on. Even something as simple as Calculator doesn't work (it just crashes as soon as i hit a number).
Activity Monitor doesn't work, "Accounts" in Sys Prefs doesn't work.... and the list goes on. I have to Force Quit everthing.
I don't get it. How can it be so fucked up when it was working fine yesterday? (I've restarted countless times -obviously)
What do I do??? I'm so lost.
Thanks for anything.

Try Disc Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair permissions.
Should do the trick. Sometimes permissions get out of whack.
What OS are you running?

Disk Utility isn't responding either. The window comes up, but as soon as I select the drive, the rainbow swirly thing comes up... and when I right clicked it in the dock and it says "Application not responding"... so I had to Force Quit. >:(

Stupid question, but you did hit "Repair" not "Verify," right?
Try restarting and hitting Shift-S. This will startup in the Unix backdoor. When you get a prompt, type "fsck -y" without the quotes. If you have Journaling enabled, type in "fsck -y -f". If you get any errors, run it again until it says it's OK. type in "reboot," restart, and try permissions again.

I didn't have the option to "Repair" or "Verify" anything. When it started up it just froze like after a second... so I had to Force Quit.
Anyway... I copied over all of my documents, music, programs, etc. to my LaCie and reinstalled the whole system.
All is okay now... just copying over the files as I type this.
Thanks, people.
