more on out 97 Jetta III...our check engine light was on for about 2 years. We had a diagnostics done and nothing turned up. The mechanic said each time the light come back one bring it in and he'll run another for free. We did this about 2 or 3 times before we just put a funny sticker over the light.
P.S. It's a good car but I once owned a 91 Interga that I loved much more than the Jetta!

I just sold my 91 integra..

Acura doesn't exist; it's a badge developed for US consumers who don't want to believe there driving a HONDA. That said, HONDA is one of the most reliable cars on the planet—a HONDA engine breaks in at 50 grand.
You really can't go wrong with a HONDA.
I am a fan of VW as well, but have never had a close up encounter over a period of time, thus I cannot comment much on reliability. I understand there fun to drive, and from research have impeccable handling capabilities.
I would consider heavily purchasing the Volkswagen Golf R32. The link below is not the newest model.

i think acuras are better then vws. a vw is a great car if you get the right "batch". 50% of their cars are good and 50% are poop. its like they have a day shift and a night shift.
ive driven the TL, and all I can say is wow. i liked it much better then any golf or jetta. I know they are in a diffferent class but the TL is a great car. Even the TSX (Euro Honda Accord). RSX was fun and spiffy. Liked it more then a GTI.
I think it depends on what you want.

(Aug 17 05, 08:02)see with the new r32, it is going for an estimated $40k. that is a lot of money for a car that isn't that fast and with leather seats
*eww*. it is pretty nimble but for that much money there are many more cars out there that cost less and are as much fun to drive.

new MK5 R32's have not come out yet and you can get Mk4 R32's for less than 30k brand new.
- alkanenine0
i know that they haven't come out yet, that why i said estimated...

got that info from there. 30k for the mkiv is reasonable. i just wish they were lighter. but for 30k, i personally rather have an evo or a used sti. just my feelings and how i drive.

all the news have been pretty unclear on the next R. some say it will be an R36 with a 280 hp engine. some news reported that it will be a twin-turbo engine making over 300+ hp.
and i don't think vw intended on competing with the evo or sti. they just happen to be in the same price range and AWD. i think they just wanted to make a super Golf as the Golf had just passed it's 20th anniversary in NA. the R32 isn't as fast as the evo or sti but it's definitely more luxurious. of course, if you're into speed, you can modify it and blow evo's and sti's away. remember, the R is a 3.2 6-cylinder. there's more potential with that engine. as the saying goes, there's no replacement for displacement.

I agree with you on that. :) I just think that article gave me that view you know? Cause 40k on a r32 is a bit pricey.
but just one thing, I think it was made to be in the same "very fast sports compact car range." I think Evo or Car magazine did a test a while back and it was between those three cars. all 3 have awd. all 3 have high HP numbers.
I just think they need to make the chassis lighter. Like the mkiii, those were light and great cars.

Erok isn't this the third time you've asked for opinions on VW vs Acura?
have'nt you checked Consumer Reports?
VW is listed as least reliable in every class. compact, sedan SUV, all of them.
That means a Ford, Kia, Suzuki, Chevy, anything is going to be more reliable.
And servicing a VW nine times out of ten means taking it to the dealership. most places wont even tune up a VW.
VW dealership is expensive and time consuming.
My wife and I just got rid of out 2000 and 2002 VW's. i am on a mission to warn all about them.

My girlfriend's VW Jetta has been a very reliable car. She loves it. It drives VERY well for such an inexpensive car. As for the NSX.......gay. ALL cars depreciate and it is IMPOSSIBLE to predict to what extent when you're ready to sell so if that's part of your decision making process you're just plain silly. A car isnt an investment.

Damn.. That's scary..

vw's in the past 10 years have been known to be pretty heavy maintenance headaches
this said, they are one of the only manufacturers that can give you leather, power options, and a nice ride for under 20k new.
acura's have the honda engine reliability. they also drive like a honda for the most part.
- alkanenine0
you guys like leather?

2002 jetta wagon with 80k, has been very good so far. And it drives/feels very nice and solid. VW's have bad rap but I think they're doing something about it.
yeah I'm knocking on wood.
- jpea0
i don't think they're doing anything for it. it's just hit and miss if a vw will turn into a lemon. best of luck kld :)
a good friend of mine has a 2002 beetle and it's been in the shop 8-9 times since she bought it. mostly under warranty, but only because she fought for them to fix it. her vw dealer tried to blame everything on the fact that she didn't come in to vw to have her oil changed, thus they don't have to warranty the car.

more on my '97 Jetta III....
I think its more Mexican than German even the "lights on" warning sounds like the "La cuca rocha" song.

Define that?

my integra with a Honda engine broke down in the middle of West Virgina once. I towed it to a Honda dealer (since there wasn't any Acura dealers in that state) and they wouldn't touch it. WTF???!!! It has Honda badges all over the the engine.

I'll agree on the vw service people, not always helpful. I was like 'hey I paid for the extended warranty', they were like 'what company did you go with. I asked 'It wasn't you guys?'
Luckily I found the paperwork.
I paid 17k for the car new and it had alarm, keyless locks, great seats and still runs strong. There are lemons out there though for sure.
