21st century rules of air travel.
When 309 passengers and crew
survive landing accident then it is a miracle. But if they had all been killed then it would have been the responsibility of the aircraft engineers and airline safety procedures.
Why are we so unwilling to trust in human beings to do their job responsibly and conscientiously that when their labours bear fruit we refuse to acknowledge their endeavour?

I would have to agree, scientifically, the chances of this happening again are slim to none.
It's an anomaly. I love that word.

i think the same thing everytime NASA puts a shuttle in space.
- Gorbie0
but it is that same unwillingness to pardon human error that strives to always make things better next time.

my brother is a pilot and apparently everything gets blamed on "pilot error" because otherwise the airlines would lose too much money :(

That "miracle" stuff is ridiculous.
Stem is so right.

I suppose none of you believe in luck either

(Aug 8 05, 07:01)I guess in this instance, you could say everyone involved 'made their own luck' by simply doing their job or doing as they were instructed...
Sometimes it pays to listen eh?

I believe in luck but I also agree with what stem is saying.

so let me see if understand.
when 309 people live from a plane accident it was the training of the flight crew and the quick thinking of passengers who listened.
when a river overflows into a city and kills a few people it's the fault of the city planners and overdevelopment that caused too much water.
when a bomb explodes on a double decker bus and people on the bottom and front were saved it was the geometric positioning of the bomb in relation to the seats and people who shielded the blast that saved lives.
when a tsunami kills a couple hundred thousand people we get a thread that asks 'why god?'
hmm... ok. now i understand the thinking here.

Define them then.

I see what you are getting at kOna, some things are difficult to 'rationalise'
Back in the 50's there was a big flood in a place called Lynmouth in Devon, England.
On initial inspection you could quickly jump to the conclusion of bad weather, lot's of rain, river bust its banks... just bad luck, a cruel hand dealt by ol' mother nature?
Here's a bit of 'science' which helps prove that people of Lynmouth could, perhaps, have made their own luck.
There's not one simple conclusion so I appologise in advance if you are after a 'soundbite solution', but It's a good example of investigation, research and problem solving in an attempt to save lives and make peoples lives better.

there's
no such things
as miracles.
facts | sequence of events we perceive as [being] extraordinary.
- JazX0
The world is chaotic and you're better off not trying to understand or rationalize these things. No matter how hard you want to try.
But even that is a bit too philosophical for my blood.
