Anyone know how to find out what processes are needed and stop PERMANENTLY the ones not currently in use? I have 54 process going when I open my task manager, but I'm only using photoshop WTF?

google 'windows xp tweaks/optimization', or something like that. there were some good tutorials for doing this around the time xp came out.

blackviper seems to be gone. i found this page that has a pdf of the blackviper info though, plus a bunch of other utilities that i've been running to speed things up:

The essential stuff won't /let/ you shut it off. And don't stop explorer.exe. Why not just test it for yourself anyhow? Get your hands dirty.

because windows has a habit of screwing up even when you don't fuck around with it, so it's usually a good idea to know what you're doing before messing with system settings...

damn 54?! sounds like you got some crazy spyware/adware running on your comp.
maybe not, but just in case get spybot (if you don't have it) trend micro pc cillin.
also you can go into MS DOS CONFIG and shut things down you don't need

It isn't "messing with system settings". It's shutting on/off processes that will always come back with a restart if you make a mistake.
Once you learn about processes and what's-what, you can use start-run-msconfig-startup to get rid of the junk.

There's supposed to be a dictionary of processes somewhere, where you can search for a process name and the site tells you what it does and if you can shut it off or not. I'm sorry, I don't remeber the URRRRL.

if you do a google search for each of the processes file names you will find what they're for
