I have a client that has all of their videos in mpeg2 format on the internet... I would like them to be able to upload them into my cms system by simpl entering the url...
here is the catch...
Does anyone knw of a way to convert these movies to FLV's when they upload them? kind of a php automated type thing?

is FLV another movie format?
perhaps you could shoot nalewajk (paul) or enobrev an email, there's a good chance they may know this.
goodluck.

alternatively a swf would be cool

ah k.
eno does both flash and php and is very good at it, you can look up his nic and email here, or shoot me an email.

Quicktime Pro can convert .mpeg to .FLV.
I assume you have the .SWF component all set to play the .FLV?

AFAIK, QTPro will NOT convert to .flv, (unless there's a codec i don't know about.)
however, 3rd party applications like Sorrenson Squeeze will handle the job well.

but i think what james meant is how to auto-convert it on the fly.. when the client uploads that is. not sure tho!

right, that seems like what he is asking for, but that's just impossible.
just pull down the videos as the client ups them and convert them. you're gonna have to compress them out through Flash anyways into .swf files, otherwise no one will be able to view them. you cannot view a .flv file by itself.

God, come ON NT! Ya'll should be more helpfull than this.
Sorenson has an automator that turns any format in a certain directory you upload to into another, FLV's. Check it out.

not sure about automation, but Squeeze helps

hey fate_,
i am pretty sure that the watch folders for Sorrenson Squeeze have to be on the computer that Squeeze is installed on, i don't think it will work with folders on other computers connected via FTP (i.e. a web server)

yeah, not sure about an automation on a server. damn if there "is" a way i sure would be interested in getting my hands on it!!
sorry james, no help here, but good luck. you got me curious for sure.

thanks for your help everyone... obviously a gap in the market for one! :) perhaps I need to speak to someone to help me make me one... if i have a dedicated server, perhaps I can create a watch folder on it?

If you want to get really leet...
Riva FLV encoder can be run at the command line. What you can do is have that sitting on a windows server, when they upload the file execute the shell command for Riva and *ta-dahhh*. This sounds like a pain in the ass though.
