Does anyone here work at a Hispanic Market Ad agency? I'm an art director at an ad agency in Mexico City and am considering making the move (back) to the U.S. working for one of these agencies. I worked in the U.S. before but mostly in design and a little bit in regular advertising. Any tips or pointers? What agencies are the best ones? Does having worked in Mexico represent any advantage? What parts of the U.S. are best (I reckon texas and miami, but correct me if I'm wrong).
Thanks...

don't forget California. Large Hispanic population there.

Yeah, I know about California, but I don't want to live there. I lived in Southern CA 20 years and I think I've had it. Plus, it's just waaaaaay too expensive.

This is just hearsay, but I've heard that there are good agencies in Chicago (?) and New York that work heavily with Latin Markets.
I live in Denver, and despite a large hispanic population, I'm not aware of any agencies that cater to the Latin Community specifically. Though, many companies are trying to.

whoa... thanks for the link testpilot.
Does anyone here work for one of the regular agencies from a large group? (wpp, omnicom, interpublic, etc...)

when i first got to nyc i applied to as many hispanic ad agencies as possible and it seemed rather difficult in that all the prime spots (ad, design, flash) in the agencies were already taken. it feels like even the small and mid size latin agencies were all still struggling to survive.
your best bet might be to go for the hispanic branches of a bigger group (wpp, omincom, publicis) might be the the way to go. they seem to be getting a bulk of the work and have way better clients...

not sure if you remember me, but i sent you a pic of some logo you designed for a doctor here in houston. anyway, i worked for Lopez Negrete a while back. They have big clients and are getting lots of recognition. check them out here:

thanks for both of your posts (tim525 and robotron).
tim525, how was it working there? Do you think it would represent an advantage (there or at other hispanic market agencies) to have worked at a good top 10 agency in Mexico City?
Robotron: Is it really worth it to try to enter the niche, or do you think I'd be better off just going to a regular ad agency?
thanks again... :P

I once dreamt that I worked for telemundo. I was johnny canales and I was surrounded by really hot latinas in sequined bikinis.

hey chilaquil, how is your VISA status?
I dont know if you know that you have to be hired here in the USA first before being to travel with a Work VISA and as far as I know they still kinda touchy about it.

Haha. That was like the best, worst Spanish ever.
Anyway, most of the big agencies in Miami besides CP+B do mostly Hispanic advertising. Unless there's another office in, say, Buenos Aires, many are the headquarters for all advertising to the south.

try texas

el_chilaquil, i would def try going for a big agency, the experience is worth lots, esp. when going to a smaller one later. also, being latino is cool right now, so you'll def be a hot commodity in the creative department.
but just be warned, once the gringos at a big agency find out your mexican, they automatically think you always know where the best mexican restuarants are...
je! je!
