would it help to go here, or have you done that a thousand times already:

taking a day trip to the art museum or a few interesting galleries sometimes helps me.
or, strangely enough, the zoo...

I'm not sure Fariska, I've been doing this for 7 years and each year I seem to get more confused about what I want out of this job...

mmm maybe in the future will be the same also for me... all can i say is now for me works. Also 'cause if i feel creatively flat and do nothing i feel more frustrated

That's the thing Fariska, I'm getting increasingly frustrated. Without sounding like a prick, I'm pretty good at what I do. I have a good eye for typography, detail, I know what works... but I'm just not happy with what I do and think it's always shit. I see some portfolios and notice some pretty solid conceptual thinking but can never seem to get there myself. I'm sure I'm not the only one to think this.
I think I'm too indecisive though, always in pursuit of perfection. Makes you think sometimes, maybe design was the wrong choice? Can't see myself doing anything else but where does that lead?

Saying that, I've no regrets coming from my previous career (software engineer trainee) to design - drawing your office chair wired up to the mains electricity is enough to make anyone consider their future.
Maybe I've been neglecting my typeface work recently, Laziness is to blame, or maybe apathy. Same thing happened in high school with the guitar. A collaborative project bit the dust through recently and I had high hopes for it. Same thing though - laziness/apathy on all sides.

One word: relax.
You need it.
Need to do things completely different form design. Such gardening, cooking or else. Then you will see that you miss design stuff.

rotate your tires (move your desk around)... or else just get away from it completely. inspiration happens when you are least searching for it. forget about forcing something, instead let it happen naturally. surround yourself with things / people environments that make you feel good... and relax, in fact mad-chill like you are a kitty cat on valium.

Being from Edinburgh and working in Canada? Is that correct?
Sorry just making an observation, as my folowing statement maybe difficult.
I find it really usful to meet up with some of my old uni//work/design friends (in the flesh), no one related to my current job, and just chatting about design. What's hot ,whats not, opinions, etc... getting away from the everyday life can help espeacillay around people that understand what your doing;).

good call Dancer, it especially helps if your old classmates have had less succes than yourself. Definitely a good ego boost!

go be homeless. give a close friend or family member all your cards, keys phone, everything so you cant get back into your life. start with only 5 bucks and see what happens in the course of two weeks or so. you're bound to think of some things you can't even dream of now

Dancer - I like your thinking :)
I'm still in Edinburgh, only just applied to emigrate so got a while yet before we leave (if we're accepted).
Everyone I know is connected with the design industry, even some people on NT, and they're doing pretty well and very good at what they do. Funnily enough though, almost everyone I know in the industry has been through this at some point and has come through it. Scary though - some quit, some changed jobs - I don't want that to happen.

how about doing a little photography as a way of getting out in the world/reexciting the visual synapses?
- 5timuli0
I would Rand but I'm crap ;)
I think...

5timuli, you should email Bonseff and see if you can get in on the second round of the NT print exchange. The first round was a lot of fun and quite rewarding... 27 prints from peeps all around the globe...

Print ecchange? That in the PVN? I'll search, sounds interesting.
You know, me at my most relaxed recently? Film Museum, Vondelpark, outdoor screening of Spinal Tap. If only life was always as sweet ;)

Here's what I do - I stop designing and travel a little. I don't even focus on art. I do things I want to do that aren't art related. And if you're like me, I get inspired by things I see around me and it makes me want to create and design. Hope that helps some.
