I picked up the new Mercury Rev a few weeks back, mind you I haven't listened to them sinces Boces, which was released like 10 years ago, but I was very disappointed, if this is what the kids nowadays wanna hear, those kids should be shot...

one of the better albums to come out lately has to be the new ....
- snuggles0
agreed.

If you don't like the new music, you're not looking hard enough
- Mimio0
snuggles, they've evolved since that album quite a bit. I think it's great music, still totally inventive but far more mature and less pretentious.

good call snuggles-
don't ask me where that "k" came from

maybe its that everyone keeps looking at the the same music for different resultskinda like pushing on the pull door to me
if you want something new try something new
go on a guitar diet
for one month make it a point to listen to music that doesn't make use of a guitar, who knows what you'll find
- Mimio0
Exactly Soler, there's so much out there, there's no cause for blanket statements.

Agreed, they've evolved, I just don't like how polished they sound now, they were always a bit over the top, but I loved how melodic they were, now I just find them to be TOO over the top and they've lost something, not sure what it is, maybe it's just me...

name some good new bands then. i want to expand my music listening horizons.
and if they sound anything like yellowcard then please punch yourself in the face for me.

I know there are great bands out there, but the press doesn't. Or they choose to ignore them.
Maybe I should have been more clear in my first post.
Rolling Stone is nothing compared to NME, who finds a new "best band in the world" every week.
I almost feel sorry for the teen today, who think they are listening to something new, something that will change the world. It's mostly just copycat bands who blow their best songs on the first album.
Wwhen I first listened to the Bravery, I couldn't believe my ears. It was fun, but not original and it made me want to pull out the old Duran records.

so NIN isn't original? although he sold out, his sound was.
- dahl0
I'll post some bands later...
btw. I don't even know Yellowcard, I don't watch MTV or VH1 and radio is also a no no.
I find bands from websites and podcasts.
- snuggles0
Reading Rolling Stone or the likes will never put you on to good bands, Metal Edge on the other hand...

NIN sounds outdated today, maybe it was fresh when he started but not any longer.
But's it's ok with Trent, he's been at it forever, so you don't expect him to change the world any longer.

I don't think NIN sold out at all. The new record is sick.
Good modern bands:
Wilco
A.C. Newman
DJ Shadow
Spoon
Ours
Beck
David Bowie
FischerspoonerGo head, rip 'em apart
- arinya0
Does DJ Shadow qualify as a band? I think we should all start listening to Progressive music and that be the end of that.
- Soler0
I'd say so. Whats teh difefrence between him and Trent? only that Trent sings
- dahl0
Many of the listed bands could be big, if labels (and radio) pushed them.
Others (like Bowie and Beck) are dated and their best years are behind them.
