I am starting some work for an out of state client and have a few questions that have come up for this particular situation.
1) What is a good way to have them sign and send back a contract? Is FAX the only good way? Is it possible to do with an email reply?
2) What is a good way to get paid immediately? If I use Paypal can I transfer the funds from my Paypal account to my bank account immediately? Someone told me they previously gave the client their bank account info for a transfer. Is that secure at all?

I wouldn't use paypal.. With large sums of money, the surcharges are ridiculous.

1) i'm comfortable with an email approval, though i don't know how much weight that would have if lawyers got involved.
2) waiting for the check to come via the post office isn't an option?

i do fedex contract signing. (i send the contract, they sign, and send back)
then usally bank transfer. (triple check your info)

sounds like you're hurting for cash.
if you can afford it fedex the proposal to them. inside the fedex envelope put another self addressed and paid for envelope that they can send the signed proposal back to you in.
as far as payment you can do 1/2 up front (just have them put the check in along with the signed proposal) and the remainder of the fee at the end of the project.
if you really need the cash now jsut have them put the check for the full amount in the fedex envelope when the send back the signed contract.

How do you do your email approval? Just have them reply with thier name and date. My friend at work said that's not legally binding but I'm not sure.
I'd rather not wait for the check since the project has to be done in 2 weeks and I need some $ now anyway.

do the fedex thing then. might cost you 15 or 20 bucks to overnight the packages but in 3-4 days you'll have your money... all of it.
paypal's fees will cost you just as much as the postage will so either way.

The fedex contract signing sounds like a good idea.
Also is bank transfer secure? Couldn't they use the same info to take $ from you or pay their bill online?

seed not sure how that works. i don't know if you can tell your bank to only allow them to deposit or what.
do you really want another company having your bank info? i mean, when you get hired for a full time gig there is a full page disclaimer that helps cover your butt when the company has your bank info.
it's kind-of a big deal.
