I dunno. I cant agree. If you give police guns to shoot people with you surely can't lock them up for a botch. If he'd just shot random people in the street - yes - but this was part of an operation. Lies aside - there was obviously a tragic mistake. A lie doesn't make it murder.

the shoot to kill policy was brought in by John Stevens, Blair's predecessor - it was brought in before the bombings and is national policy based on the experiences of other countries including israel and sri lanka.
i think it is short sighted to simply blame the officers involved or even ian blair, they are trying to protect us in a very difficult situation.
however, they MUST learn some very important lessons from this as some serious questions have been raised: why didn't they stop him boarding the bus? who released the misinformation that he was wearing bulky clothes and jumped the barrier?

the whole shoot to kill debate is irrelevant in any case. If the police are aiming to shoot a suspect they are always trying to kill, their is no policy of shoot to injure or shoot to scare or shoot to look like charlie big potatoes. It's more a shift in policy from shooting the body to shooting the head.
In any case I agree with Vespa, the whole thing is a tragic exposure of poor communication between the police and various departments.
It can't happen again.
