"goodle" hhahaha i like that.
We used the scales of justice in one we did. Not for a lawyer/lawfirm though. I find that they just usually like their name.

I work at a law firm in Chicago and do all manner of marketing, web design, print work, etc., etc.Went to a seminar a while back where everyone had a nice laugh at the use of the cliche crap above.
I've got a gigantic list in my bookmarks of good and bad law firm websites, and plenty of both use that stuff.Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Some other things to keep in mind:
How large is this law firm? How well are they known in the city?
If they are not well known, the best thing to do might be work with the name more, and less visual images like the shield.
As with any product or service, it takes time for branding to succeed. You DON'T need a logo for a law firm, not always. The one thing that's going to get them remembered is their name. Once that's established well a logo can follow, if neccessary.
But a shield with RR on it...if the name recognition isn't already there, it fails.

I think i am going with simplcity as everyone is stating...I have also come up with a simple mock up to show them how it may look in a website.
so far 2 partners have liked the idea...
