Advertising ruined my life...

I've been working as a designer in advertising since I graduated 2 years ago. I'm getting kind of tired of it and want to go into 'proper' design but fear I've ruined my chances of getting into a decent design agency owing to my lack of 'proper' design experience. Has anyone else managed the jump and how did you find it?

I did email design for about 14 months and have moved into website design and production with no trouble. I did however do freelance web work on the side and worked on personal stuff to keep me up to date with what was happening etc.
Perhaps do that if you're not already but don't be shy about selling your skills in advertising, after all, a website is a medium for selling things - company products, a brand, a name etc.
I'd say if you're not already doing web work or the "proper" design you want to, work on personal projects to ensure that you can make the transition easier.

Yeah, I've been on the look out for comissions and such like for the last couple of months (just done my first book cover actually).
I guess you'ree right, I shouldn't be ashamed of the work I'm doing in advertising - I mean most of it's actually pretty good - but most design agencies want a designer with experience in identities, packaging or a related area.
I'll see how it goes, cheers Jamble.

its true, the more work you do the more of the same you attract. Do as much of your own work as possible, and have 2 portfolios. One for run of the mill work and then for proper design work. I did 2 yeaars of advertising myself but really just wanted to do design. I've moved to design but mostly web stuff. Now i want to get back into good print design! It will mean taking a paycut though(i think!).

my transition has been a smooth one. i worked for a large hispanic advertising/marketing agency here in houston doing nothing but ads and such. now i work at a prominent design studio and i've had no problems at all. i actually enjoy it very much. good luck man. i'm sure you'll do okay.

Yeah the pay cut thing is a worry too, I'm happy to take one for job satisfaction and all that but I was hoping to get a mortgage some time soon!
Good print design is where I want to be though, I should really stick at it I guess.
