i'm going overseas to do some backpacking travel with a friend of mine. all in all we plan on jumping from place to place (starting in ireland and ending up...well somewhere south...maybe naples?)
we plan on going for at least three months but that is also open. my question is: would it be better to buy an open-ended ticket or just buy a one way ticket there, and when i get tired / run low on money buy a oneway ticket home?
i have heard that there will be a lot more scrutiny and hassle that i will have to go through if i purchase a oneway (because of terrorists and everything else shitty in the world)
there seems to be a lot of travelers here both to and from america and was just wondering if you peeps could give me some insight on this matter.
thanks!

i got an open ended ticket. it not only turned out to be the best value (£1000 for the whole thing), but it also allowed us to know where we were going but flexibly. Depending on where you're leaving from, I'd suggest either http://www.bridgetheworld.com (from the UK) or from elsewhere : http://www.staralliance.com/star…
Bridge The World got us to Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and LA and back to London for a grand! Bostin'!

Additionally, BridgeTheWorld are British Airways and Qantas, so the planes are kick-ass!

Yeah, the open-ended would be a good idea. Some countries might harass you if you don't hold a ticket that says where you're going to next. I had to show that when arriving in the UK. I had to prove that I was going somewhere else and not going to 'over stay'.

Oh, and one other point, SORT YOUR VISAS OUT ASAP! We found that when travelling from the UK, if you're heading out to Asia, the embassies take AGES to get visas issued, and all the time you're waiting, they have your passport! We almost missed leaving on time thanks to the Vietnamese embassy in London!

as far as visas, i shouldn't have to worry about that if i am staying within within europe right?
actually we have talked about morocco and the ukraine. crap.

there is a pretty decent guide, I think you can find it using Google, that tells you where you need a visa for, the cost and the addresses of your local embassy... it might even be on the government website. sorry I can't remember!
