If you own a digital camera and it came with a manual...i would suggest going through that. And then as some have mentioned...trial and error. I am still learning too...and its sometimes really REALLY fraustrating...but its worth it for that one photo that makes you smile and admire that you took it.
Good Luck.

hey man, everyone is right that you need to have a solid understanding of lighting in order to take good fashion photos. But, you need to understand lighting for any type of photography.
I personally almost never use strobes when I'm shooting. I avoid shooting in the studio as well.
I'm very big on shooting with ambient light, sometimes with a reflector.
I tend to expose for the shadows and blast out the bg when possible. But, there are many different styles of fashion photography. Some shooters use the same lighting rigs that you would see for a film set.
I guess the first piece of advice would be to understand how light works and then understand the shutter-speed/aperture relationship. Without those basics then you'll never get what you want.
First things first, buy a light meter and then set your camera to full manual. Well, maybe keep auto-focus but at least know how to override it.
But in order to get what you're looking for a wide-field TTL light meter isn't going to be refined enough to do the job.
Once you've figured out how to shoot in ambient light, or using single-point (the sun) with a reflector(s) then you'll be able to move onto studio stuff.
This doesn't have to be a lengthy process but you need to understand shutter-speed/aperture in order to use a studio rig so . . .

It's a great place to get advice, tech help, etc. The shooters in there aren't super-stars by any means but it's a good bunch of people and they're quite helpful.
Hope that helps out a bit.

Study lighting. It's key for fashion photography. Look into fashion magazines too, see how other people are shooting, you should be able to deconstruct the shot.
A good cheap way to play around with fashion photography is to shoot outside using a reflector, you can get some nice results. It helps to have a good looking subject to.

trial and error my friend
experiment - write everything down - play with lighting both natural and synthetic
try color and b/w
after a few weeks you'll have it down to an average degree and then it all boils down to how far you can push it
