This is a general question, pondered after seeing countless "Site Crit, Please" posts on the PVN.
Don't get me wrong, I think getting second opinions is a smart thing, but I am not sure that the PVN is an accurate testing environment and am really just curious as to why people feel that they need "Newstoday blessings" before going live with a site.
I guess I can see the argument that the PVN is full of great designers (and let's be honest, some pretty shitty one's too), so they force you to be tip-top. I get that and I often seek other designers opinions on UI, layout, typography, etc.
My problem is this - I think (some) designers at the PVN are too pre-occupied designing for designers or designing so they can get a shout-out at Newstoday. And that is what is getting stale.
Maybe I am rambling, because it's a great day in Austin, TX and I have had several cups of coffee, but I just needed to let it rip.
Have a good weekend PVN.

i think you can get some useful insight here. I posted once about being discouraged about not being able to find a job. And i got a lot of good critic on my resume my online site and a bunch of other stuff. I found it useful. Though it didnt start out about a site critic it ended up being a critic which i think will help alot.
maybe?

praktiv, I've seen plenty of sites (especially the more recent site crit requests) that are designed for avg. folk. In fact, I'm seeing less and less over-the-top and super-abstract shit out there.

hmm. tough call on this i guess.
i really have never posted a site for critique per say...but the fact remains; there are a lot of really good designers here, and it is always interesting to see how others in the field perceive your work.
opinions are just that, but sometimes straight facts about a design are overlooked by the designer and it helps to have people bust your chops a bit : ) or at least make you think twice about why you did it the way you did.

It's great to get opinions from other designers, but in the end I prefer to just go my own way.
Unless I'm getting paid :)

i think it's pretty easy to tell who's full of shit here and who's offering good advice.
i don't think i've ever put anything up for crit here though.

it's all opinion anyways, and if you think it's stale just ignore it. people need criticism, and this is a good place for it.

i've put up a few sites for crits. the majority of them recieve well thought out and useful feedback, even if the feedback is "try harder next time." sure you have to weed through some bullshit, but in the end, you get a lot of insight that maybe you were too engrossed in the project to see. also, in the end, nobodys word is set in stone, and if i feel my solution works best, i'll use it anyway. as for the "newstoday shoutout".., who the fuck cares? there's way bigger things in life than getting an NTB link. our limelight is small and superficial. if it lands on you, cool, if not, life will surely go on and it doesn't mean you're not doing great work. if your focus is gaining attention for your work instead of solving design problems, you're in the wrong field...go try acting or something.

It's always good to get other people's opinions that are in your field. I post crits here because I respect alot of designers that post in the pvn, and it never hurts to get a second opinion.. Even if I don't use the advice, it can bring new ideas to mind.
