"Ignore the [wrong] perceptions of its society by some who never been there, constructed over Rambo II-III screenings."
not sure if that was aimed at me unfit, but yeah, i concur. never been there and really can't talk one way or the other about it. i guess my only point (if there was one) was the fact that all photos i see from there are beautiful.

"Other countries/other systems would have collapsed already, if endured the same external policies by 1 country."
Their climate makes survival easier than eastern Europe. They have work camps. They have steady cash input from visitors. The repression system was perfected for decades. It won't fail too soon, the tourists won't let it happen.
Cubans are wonderful people who can't do what you did: come visit your country. Unlike you, they aren't free. They go to jail for expressing their opinions. And it's not because of external policies
of USA.I'm not saying, "don't go there". I'm saying, "if you go there, try to do something for them". At least don't spread news of how good life there is.
You have fun and then you leave and they have to live in a secret police driven country.
I don't hear of foreigners taking risks to become exiles in Cuba.I've had a Cuban teacher. Sometimes he would come to school very sad. Those were the days he'd received messages from home. Who of his friends were arrested, tortured, etc.
Has this blurred my vision? I don't mind if it has.

Beside all this negative side to it, Havana is a great place. The atmosphear in the old Havana is amazing. I spent this New Years eve at a ball at the catheadral square. Unforgetable expirience.

Was supposed to be there in 2001. Got cancelled due to Elian Gonzalez fiasco. Was flying in, commercially, from Spain. Got a Cuban visa in Windhoek, Namibia.
sucks... :(

" would love to go to Cuba too and I know I can't because every cent I spent there will prolong the suffering. I love every picture from there, their misery is so good looking.

(Jul 9 05, 10:29)"so the US emabrgo on Cuba isn't prolonging their suffering?... the little amount of money i spend there as a tourist pales in comparison.

(Jul 9 05, 17:20)Fidel is a an @ss there's your major problem. You guys trying to tell me through the years that other countries haven't dumped major money there. It's little Africa. Corruption guaranteed!

(Jul 9 05, 17:29)The people of Cuba aren't poor. There's just nothing for them to buy.

moural
(Jul 9 05, 17:57)and who's fault is that?
ohh right, the USA's, as usual.
btw, it's not nice to be ignorant.
- ********0
btw, moural, there have been plenty of embargos spread throughout the world. Afrikaans-ruled Suid Afrika comes to mind. Doesn't mean people couldn't buy things. It's piss poor planning and corruption.
- 2cents0
do you even read my replies?... i brought up the US embargo as one example of something that contibutes to Cuban people's suffering far more than tourism... and it was directed towards shaft's response... got off your American high horse already, i was simply stating the obvious and no i didn't say its all America's fault.
- moural0
When did I say anything about the US and an embargo? I'm not even talking about that.
The people of Cuba barely pay for anything - the education and healthcare systems are amazing and the utilities and services are dirt cheap. However, things like clothes are rationed, so it's not like you can run over to the mall and pick out a great new set of kicks. Like I said, the problem is not money - communism, with all of its atrocities, is able to keep a healthy workforce - but instead opportunity.

The US has made Fidel what he is.
In 46 years of power as a socialist revolutionary on America's doorstep, he's seen off 10 US administrations in that time. It's a joke that you're prepared to travel as far as Iraq and Afghanistan to invade and 'remedy' a situation yet you let the nearest 'enemy' to your shores canter on for nearly half a century in direct opposition to your beliefs.
Hmmm... It might have something to do with ...natural resources?
Oil sure beats sugar cane.
Solved.

Friend or Foe
for the American Government it's simple, foe's are evil and must be attacked in official opinion and media, friends shouldn't, how do we pick our friends?
The firends.
* Russia after Soviet still has no real democracy has Nukes, allows no autonomity to Chechenia and terrorizes the population, well we don't care because we beat the evil Soviet Union already in the magic Cold War, and there is nothing in Russia we care about anyway.
* China, occupies Tibet has Nukes and is lead by Communists (shady democracy) and allows no autonomy in Taiwan, we don't care because we have to borrow money from the Chinese Government and can't beat them anyway.
* Pakistan doesn't have a democratic elected leader and Nukes, we don't care because we know the civilians would vote for a muslim leader that doesn't like us much and they supposedly helped to catch Bin Laden.. or not.
* Fundamentalist Taliban in Afghanistan during Soviet Union, well we don't care because they helped us fight the evil SU, an enemy of an enemy must be a friend, yes even gave them weapons, money and training.
* Dictator Saddam Hussein around 1985, we don't care because he kept Iraq from Religious leadership and possible fundamentalism and kicked some Religious Iran butt when we liked it so let's give him money and weapons in exchange of oil.
The enemies. (very IMPORTANT, we are good so there MUST be evil)
* Cuba since ever, Fidel is a Communist that doesn't want to die and was buddies with true evil Soviet Union, and we can't admit now that the Cold War was a farse even if it means harming the Cuban civilization.
* Taliban after 9/11, OH LOOK there they suddenly turned enemy after nobody cared for 20 years, why? well we think our great new enemy Osama is over there and they are fundies but they also were that when we supported them so doesn't count.
* Saddam after Iraq invaded Kuwait, HEY we never told him to attack our rich oil friends, and shit they might even win with the weapons WE gave, so start a gulfwar but keep Saddam in power because there is still the chance they turn Religious and his repression system kinda works.
* Saddam after 9/11, Hey remember that guy we give sactions and throw rockets at for the past decade after we gave him power? Well now is our chance, let's put the WMD and why not Nukes? rumours into turbo so we start a war beat his regime in an easy war (the weapons we gave them are rusted by now anyway and he can't pay the army), and abuse that victory for politics and the sweet taste of oil from our fresh stable Middle East.
* Palestina, HAH wrong that's not an enemy we don't even recgonize them as a country, just a bunch of poor fundamentalists after WE gave a chunk of their land to the state of Israel that formely didn't have land for 1750 years. That Israel kept on stealing land and wasn't friendly to their Muslim neighbours doesn't matter because their enemies are our enemies, (and let's admit it, the eternal victim deserved a license to kill).
