yo...tell me about it...my major in college was "multimedia"...it sucks having to recite the university's sales pitch whenever someone asks what you do

discussing what 'new media' is, especially in relation to art, is one huge circular conversation.
everyone gets frustrated and it's not a constructive conversation.
instant, what kind of courses did you take for your 'multimedia' major?

my school was super conceptual...classes didn't teach programs or languages...just a 1 session crash course and then we were given objectives to achieve and had to learn tools ourselves...we plays TONS of games...mostly board / card games...a lot of focus on info / interactive design theory...all of our studios were pretty much open and we came up with our own projects and goals...sometimes loose guidelines like "make a non-digital game" but that would be the only constraints...it was pretty awesome really

did you have to read Lev Manoviche's Principles of New Media? That's a real winner... sort of.
I guess he does a somewhat decent job of breaking down what he considers new media though...

never read that one...lots of mcluhan, baudrillard, werman, tufte, vannevar bush, and loads others that i can't really remember

any favorites?

tufte's books were by far the most useful...they cover a good range of concepts with practical examples
