now that apple will switch to intel chips next year, what is going to happen in the next 12 months? i am looking to get a new laptop, and have always wanted one of those 17inch joeys, but would it be silly to buy one now? i can't wait a year. are there comparable PC's? not looking to start a fight, just needing some info....thanks. //c

if you want the 17 inch, you should get it now.. it's only Mac minis and iMacs that gets the intel to begin with, Powermacs and Powerbooks will be the last

It's going to take apple 2 years to make a complete transition to an intel processor.

add the time it take to work all the kinks out and it's more like 2.5 years away.
do it... now. don't waste another second. you'll want a new one then anyway.
do it

DO IT!

of course if you think you'll use it with an external monitor just get the 15". it all about the portability. but I digress.

I don't recommend a 17" one if you plan on carrying it around all the time. The 15" is a nice medium.

no fights, but i bought a toshiba satellite 1.73ghz, 15.4 widescreen wxga 100 gig hd dvd-cd burner 2gig ram blah blah blah, and it has been beyond great. it took me a long time to buy (research, opinions, research, money) but it is well worth it!

I really appreciate my pb now because I was able to freelance at work with it while my cd was out this past 2 weeks. A great investment.

lvl_13, how much did that put you back?

it was $1499 + 299 to max memory (it comes with a 512 stick which worked fine...i was just paranoid ) with a $200 mail in rebate.
it connects to my 19' for a second monitor no problem, and the wifi is dope.
it has been really nice overall without a doubt.

expect ipod video intergrated.
saw some prototypes. it looks cool but not sure if it will make it to market. its bulky and horizontal. and no more wheels. rather a touch strip bar.
who knows which one they are gonna go with. I saw 3 of them. other one was a stick. like shuffle but with a tiny screen.
well they should do something about the shuffle cause its not selling wheel due to its lack of visual interface.

the 17 is a sexy machine, but I like the pc because I own all the software for it.

I don't care what chip is in my computer as long as I don't have to use Windows I am okay.
Rather use a 300MHZ G3 than a PGHZ P4 if my options are Win Xp verses OS X

I'm selling my desktop now that I got a laptop with similar (or higher) specs and is almost as upgradeable as desktop. Only keyboard, mouse and monitor stay. I was always considered weird among friends for saying computers are still at an early development stage and having a big desktop case under the desk is abnormal.
Come on, would you buy a TV that has 4 fans inside and takes 30 secs. to start?
