"all he did was rip a style off some kids who actually had a point to their work."
kids? wha?
who exactly did carson rip off?
please do some research before making such inane commments.
and yes he started a huge trend/aesthetic, he is part of design history, like it or not.
and just because you weren't "into design" when he was in his prime, you most likely have no idea how much he contributed to the state of design.
don't discredit his contributions because he "has a big ego" or "i don't like what he does." at least have a valid reason please.
think about that

as a person i dont like him much. (he come to my school for a conferance about 2 years ago)
he cancelled the first time because his ears hurt so he didn't go on the plane.
that was the first impression he left on me. (i wasnt interrested in design when i was a kid, just transformers, ninja turtles and hockey)

(Jul 7 05, 04:13)That's the point, 'design', they type of stuff David Carson does is self-congratulatory (wank) and seems to do nothing exept inspire people who should know better and alienate those who don't get it. This is really strange considering it is called 'graphic communication'.
Turtles, Transormers etc. are all design, all part of the fabric of life, part of our childhood and part of our lives now (some of us) have children of our own. Snobbery tells us otherwise, that Davids' cool, Donattello ain't.
Respect for being honest and not 'going with the flock'
The one 'celeb' designer I have respect for is Wayne Hemmingway - top bloke!

"Today, with emphasis on self, on style, rather than on content or idea, and in much of what is alleged to be graphic design, communication at best, is puzzling. Order out of chaos, it seems, is not the order of the day."
/\ What Paul Rand said, I think this is very true, which is why I am against his whole thing about self-indulgent graphic design

"who exactly did carson rip off?"
Well without going into too many specifics, lets just say from a place in Michigan and a place a little north of Los Angeles.
" and yes he started a huge trend/aesthetic, he is part of design history, like it or not"
As I said before, he did not start it.

i really think people should differentiate between art and graphic design.
art is for yourself [the aforementioned wank, or rasturbation as i call it], and graphic design is communicating something for a company. you may choose to use art, or to imitate art for the purposes of conveying your message for the client, but in the end it's still just an ad.
what carson did was use his own art to convey the message to surfers or whatever.
it seems like a lot of people in here are blasting designers for doing this, and for this becoming a trend.
just keep in mind that american eagle or whatever, those stupid drawings and doodles everyone is using right now, is not art, it is just imitating art to sell things. i think this is perfectly acceptable. if art is what sells right now, then fucking use art. otherwise you're not being an effective designer, you're just being stupid and stuck in the past. or maybe you're not designing in a field where you need anything more than stringent old rules from the fifties.
- scarabin0
basically, if the wank sells, it's good graphic design.
- scarabin0
and carson didn't invent breaking rules anyway, the fucking dadaists did

i felt the video was too short. i didnt really get much out of it. seemed like the music credits were just as long as the documentary itself.

i do love his work, particularly the stuff he did for nine inch nails

Art asks questions, Design answers them....If art is called design, but it fails to communicate a message like design is supposed to...why is it ok to call it art again as a cop-out? Shouldn't it do one thing well, instead of mix and match and get both wrong?
Or perhaps it's better to try to achieve both states, being both art and design, and have a truer impact.

I saw his work in transworld growing up surfing/skating then in raygun and blue, I thought it was great, always new and different. He def. defined that era for me. But when I got into design he had reached that point were people had overanalyzed it to death so it was kinda played. For sure one of the greats, like it or not.
I like it.
