Hey, I sent mine out the day we all agreed to. I don't know why it took so long to get to you, Ex.
Can't wait to see yours, though!

print designers will be valuable in the near future as doorstops and e-paper weights

Print design will never go out of style.

I've got a background in interactive, print, and motion!! I personally see all the experience and diversity as brilliant.
True though some studios and professionals say one should probably focus on a specific area. Hmmmm perhaps, but I like the diversity, it gives me an opportunity to spread my knowledge, continually learning. I can see that people who do say, "focus" have a point. but yeah focus on what YOU enjoy. focus on DESIGN, fuck the medium!!
- ratbaggy0
having said "fuck the medium" never forget the medium. All have particular requirements.
- F_180
never specialize. good design is good design, regardless of the medium. there's no reason why you cant transfer print skills to motion, or web skils to print, etc.

I concentrate on web/interactive at the agency I work at - but outside of that I keep up the print side of my skillset in freelance work.
I'd be gutted if I couldn't do both - as I think both dicsiplines complement each other in certain ways...you certainly can learn a lot more about typography from a through understanding of print...

Dude, don't specialise, never ever neglect a skillset, you never know when one or the other will come in handy. Theres no reason why you cant be a badass print AND web designer, just got to understand the differences and cater for them
- radar0
yeah, knowing both and keeping up with each one is important. You are much more valuble then a plain ole' print designer or vice versa.

I like to design for print, web and broadcast, as long as I'm not coding the web stuff, well since I can't, I'm happy...
I'd hate to just be in one area, especially web...

I do both. I think its great. Its good to have focus in two areas.
I just sent out a portfolio focused on my print work because that's what they wanted. I referenced my interactive work and now they are asking me to show some of that too.

i do both. there isnt much to learn in print. i mean you learn the basics and start pushing design and materials.
the web however, it's hard as shit to keep up

when i started designing in '94ish it was all print work (since there wasn't really an internet to speak of)
by '99-2000 i got the gig as an art director to an IT firm doing mainly web work...
at the time i honestly didn't know fuck all about web design, but the head honchos there wanted someone with a lot of advertising and design experience that they could take to high level meetings with clients...and i fit the bill for them..
since then i've worked in web and print..
NO regrets.
there is no downside to working in both...
in fact, i think it helps keep the creative energy going if you can do both..
design is design, and obviously there are radical differences between the two, (online and print) but fuck anyone that says 'jack of all trades master of none' type shit..
if you're good, you can do excellent work in both worlds..
besides, it just adds to your net worth, so to speak..
cheers

exador, where is my fucking print?

If you have to specialize, don't write off the other, either you'll need to know it someday or you'll have to work with someone thats doing the other and the knowledge will come in handy.
doing both keeps it interesting
