it's based upon our history of being able to carry them with a permit. even so, we live in an extemely industrialized nation, obivously, so they are prevelant
you can't stop some knucklehead from shooting someone if they aim to do it. I don't care where you are in the world, you want to kill someone you can do it with a knife or a shovel.

Killing someone with a knife takes alot more effort and courage for want of a better word. Shooting someone is the quick, easy cowardly way of doing it.
Killing someone with a shovel would take a good few blows to the head. Only a complete pshyco would do it.
With guns, a perfectly sane person can flip and loose all reason for a split second and shoot someone. With a knife you have alot more time to realise what the fuck you are about to do

he then committed suicide in front of his family.

I hate guns.
I live in an inner city part of Milwaukee (Riverwest, Dob's would know). I often hear gunshots on weekends, its hard to tell this time of year tho with all the fireworks.
Anyways, There have been two murders with two blocks of my house since I got there 9 months ago. Neither were random, both outdoor shootings. I actually walked past one of the scenes on the way home from a pub one night.... police tape and all that. I was too "into the night" to really notice tho, we thought it was car accident... till there were flowers and candles and newspaper clippings outside the house the next day :(Guns are sooooo lame and only cause trouble.

Ok, one more gun story.
Three weeks ago I was sitting on my front porch smoking a joint on a saturday at about 2:30 in the morning. The thugs that live across the street were partying and rented a stretched hummer limo. It pulls up in front, after a night of partying, while I'm on my front porch. The first dude out pulls a chrome pistol out of his belt and fires off the entire clip into the air... about 12 shots... CRACK-CRACK-CRACK, etc. I jumped so fast that I dropped the joint... which fell between the cracks of my porch. i was worried the spliff would catch all the leaves on fire, it didnt. You should have seen the limo drivers face when he was waiting to get paid. I dont know if i have ever seen anyone so nervous. I dont blame him tho. As Jazx said, when it gets hot out, shit gets hot in the hood. a cop never even came by.
