HipHop Knowledge - KRS
http://www.blackspade.co.nz/NT/K…"{interviewer}
Now KRS-One, now you've been quoted as saying that
rap is something we do, hip-hop is something you live.{KRS} Yes!
{interviewer}
Explain that to us please.{KRS-One}
Well, well, today hip-hop, we are advocating that hip-hop is not,
just a music, it is an attitude, it is an awareness, it is a way
to view the world. So rap music, is something we do, but HIP-HOP,
is something we live. And we look at hip-hop, in it's 9 elements;
which is breaking, emceeing, graffiti art, deejaying, beatboxing,
street fashion, street language, street knowledge, and street
entrepenurialism - trade and business. And uhh, that's where y'know
that's the hip-hop that that that we're about. We come from the uhh
the root of, of Kool DJ Herc, who originated hip-hop in the early 70's
and then Afrika Bambaata and Zulu Nation (mmhmm)
who instigated something called The Infinity Lessons
and added conciousness to hip-hop, and then Grandmaster Flash
with the invention of the mixer, on to Run-D.M.C. and then myself.
And uhh, we created the "Stop the Violence" movement, you may recall
a song, "Self Destruction" and and and so on. All of this, goes to
uhh uhh, the idea of LIVING this culture out and taking responsibility
for how it looks and and acts in society."

amen.

You can't call yourself fans of hiphop if you bash what you call mainstream... Alot of those people live and breathe more hiphop then you, and they make the music they love and want you to hear.
"NZ hip-hop comunity, the idea of hip hop as an attitude and a culture, combining the 4 main elements etc."
That's what hiphop is everywhere, not in your little backpacker new zeland, Anyone who knows hiphop knows the break down...
- uhohseangettio0
lol at all y'all

I know, I know, blackspade....
Is just seeing this "things" being portrayed as "hiphop" is overwhelming...
still listening to MF Doom, Madlib, Blackalicious, Octagon, Roots Manuva, Handsome Boy Modeling School, some french/spanish and other more obscure stuff....
- blackspade0
rise,
mate, if you read my posts i was the one NOT bashing kanye. read up^
and as for...
"That's what hiphop is everywhere, not in your little backpacker new zeland, "
that is a typical American thing to say, nothing outside your little window right? thats exactly why Hip Hop here is nothing like what comes out in the US.

I think you miss interperted what I said,
Hip Hop is the same thing every where. It doesn't matter where it comes from, or who reps it. It's no better, its no worse, it's a cultural thing, it doesn't have to sound like something to be considered hiphop... It's a lifestyle choice...
- mrdobolina0
I disagree rise, the ying yang twins suck.
- blackspade0
i dont think i mis-interpreted
you said "little backpak NZ", which has negative connotations, as if its somehow not the same
you said its the same everywhere, i dis-agree, I dont see other counties with a tight-nit comunity of hip-hop as there is here
where all the elemtents are held at the same level
I think a large majority of mainstream hip hop, (other than the likes of Missy etc), is loosing the Original culture of hip-hop, as Gangsta rap becomes the forefront of what society sees as "rap" or "hip-hop"
- rise0
little known fact about the yingyangtwins; they make the best composed music today... as far as production and composition.
--------
p.s. just cause you don't see it, doesn't mean its not there... and I seriously doubt NZ is only place in the world holding it down... HipHop isn't loosing it's originality, it's just going threw its phases, and ugh, Gangster Rap has been around since hiphop started, don't act like it just came about in the last few years...
But yeah, whatever, you guys can keep on arguing that mainstream is wack...
- mrdobolina0
"they make the best composed music today"
c'mon
- uhohseangettio0
week late onda BET awards...They were sick...Fugee's opened
- rise0
Why would it be impossible to say that they don't make great composed music? Is it because they are black? Or is it because of what they ''rap'' about? Why is it so far off balance to believe that they can't engineer greatly composed music?
