"You know, for kids."
Spielberg in full-on commercial mode.

Wow, you liked it? The graphics, of course, were amazing & virtually flawless - but I wish they would've put more time into the actual story. The whole movie was 95% attacks, and then a very abrupt conclusion. I wish they would've explored & played more with the whole 'immunities' thing. Not to mention the crappy fact that everyone lived & the final hugs were so cheeseball.
Entertaining in a lot of ways, yes, and the acting was pretty awesome, too. (That little girl is going places.) But, once again, they should've worked more on the plot.

It's speilberg. The only plot is mushy love. I was never expecting one. And yeah it ended abruptly

I just can't bring myself to care enough to see this. Speilberg does independance day? Great... I'll stay home watch Dr. Phil and play space invaders instead. Join me in the Katie Holmes PR backlash

well now that i know everybody lived, i dont have to see it anymore, phew.
- benfal990
i saw it last night.
its not very good...
too much emphasis on Cruise and his daughter...
no details and nothing developped about the aliens...
every scenes is an excuse for hollywood-scenes-patterns... like suspense, big action, drama etc.,,, everything is hollywood-calculated to have a summer blockbuster that will make a truck load of cash
no deepness ...
Visual effects are good...
Its kinda boring. Rent it on DVD, dont go to theatre,

*potential spoiler*
one mistake i found was when at the start with the EMP thing, how all electricals were stuffed, how did they guy manage to get his video camera working. also, it didnt really explain why the things were dieing and shields were off, unless i missed that.
- SteveJobs0
"I think he's asking why the shields went down,"
what's his obsession with brooke shields anyway?

GEE THX !!
ITS LIKE MATRIX ALL OVER AGAIN !!!
NOW HOW AM I GONNA WATCH THE MOVEI !!
- toe_knee0
****another spoiler****
They died because they had no immune system against our organisms.
And yeah, that video camera was a bit of a joke

There's things I really like about Speilberg movies, so I'm tempted to see this, but I'm usually expecting him to blow it with the ending. He's sappy and likes to force an emotional response from the audience.

(Jun 30 05, 08:45)worth a watch. speilberg didn't make independence day, that was ripped from war of the worlds.

Saw it today
Visual Effects are amazing.. but when uve Speilberg plus close to 200 Million.. coming up wid amazing visual effects shud not be a biggie
No story at all... and a TONNE of blunders!... Video camera running after EMP being one of them...
A LOT of hints to 9/11... like Fanning saying: "is it the terrorists?" and people posting their lost loved ones picturs on the walls... Tim Robbins has a good line where he says that an occupation from outside is never good... a hint to current affairs i guess..
Roger Ebert's review is pretty precise...
i wud say dont spend ur bucks on this one and go watch Batman Returns (which ivnt seen yet but soon will)
But the movie does something worth while... as it progresses it makes us forget wat an idiot Tom Cruise is now a days on daily television...
- toe_knee0
I think he's asking why the shields went down, not why the organisms were dying...

(Jun 29 05, 18:23)Yeah that miffed me too but i suppose it had something to do with them loosing their energy.
To be honest I'm glad this movie didnt spell everything out for me, left some of the detail to my imagination. Cause we do have imaginations, don't we,

read my earlier post if you care, meeklo.
lotsa flaws there.

Just back from seeing it myself and have to say it's the best and most gripping movie I've seen since the LOTR trilogy ended.
It was given a 12A rating in the UK (under 12s can see it with a parent) which I think might be a bit low - some of the scenes would freak the shit out of kids, especially when the tripods start frying people at the start of the movie.
It's definitely one I'll be going to see again.

I think he's asking why the shields went down, not why the organisms were dying...

Things that confused me... the mysterious working video camera was one... but then they woke up at the other house in the morning and there was total carnage but their car was totally untouched, sitting nicely on the drive!
