I was wondering how do you get Robots from search engines to pick up your sites? Is it through link exchange and meta tags? What else do you need to improve your site's chances of getting picked up by them?
depends...some search engines go strickly off the meta tags...others will take the url, title tag, or image alt tags into consideration.
oic, I guess there is no guarenteed way a site will be picked up during a search.
thanks Quincy, do you recommend anything to help a site get picked?
you could try the paid-key word program. basically you give google or overture money. The more money you give, the higher your placement is on search return results.
other then that, it's pretty much luck.
def have your robots.txt file in the root directory and have it configured properly.
As for link exchanges, I'm not fond of them, especially for business sites that don't really need to link to anyone.
Just learn how to optimize for SE and do plenty of research of what other sites are doing that are similiar to yours.
I dont know if this works, but the way I was taught about how spiders work, I would think that posting your site as a link on high traffic sites (like newstoday) would help.
Spiders go to sites and then find the links on that site and then goes to all of those. If your site isn't linked on any sites it will have a hard time being recognized.
Also I have jeard that Google ranks not just by how many links yuo have, but the relevance of the sites you are linked form. So If you go put your design link on alot of food communities, it might not come up first on searches about design.
thanks for all the info. I know about the paid feature on google, but I'm sure if I can afford to pay google for this project that i have. it's basically an online gallery. I've submitted it to a bunch of bigger gallery site and not sure if they have linked.
Also I'm not sure what robots.txt is. How do i write this and where can i get more info?
tahnks in advance
