I dont know if this works, but the way I was taught about how spiders work, I would think that posting your site as a link on high traffic sites (like newstoday) would help.
Spiders go to sites and then find the links on that site and then goes to all of those. If your site isn't linked on any sites it will have a hard time being recognized.
Also I have jeard that Google ranks not just by how many links yuo have, but the relevance of the sites you are linked form. So If you go put your design link on alot of food communities, it might not come up first on searches about design.
