why do europeans have a hard time admiting that their Euro is failing? Is it because they built so much hype around it and now see themselves as failures?
- TheTick0
The french did it. And those illuminati people...

No i don't. Kind of like lowimpakt who you seem not to complain about since he obviously speaks what you *want* to hear.

i haven't read whole thread but......
It is hard to chart the impact of the euro in the correct geopolitical/economic context. BUT It sometimes seems that the regional calls (from italy and germany etc) to a return to 'old' currencies is driven by a nationalistic agenda rather than a sound economic one.
much of the economic woes of europe come from factors above and beyond adjustment imapcts of the euro. To see what emerging economies in the east are doing to improve the "competitieness of the nation" is really really interesting. Logical processes of developing a legislative framework to ensure competitiveness, stimulating demand and creation of internal markets etc etc.
so basically retraction and retreat within europe is not the answer.

Pardon my ignorance:
The thing I don't get with the euro, is that it has differing value in each 'member' country.
Wages, living standards, cost of food cost of petrol cost of consumer goods are of different value in each country - is this a single currency?
Was the intention of the euro just create the illusion of a single currency?

-----------------------------the whole european project is led by "unity in diversity". Sounds like a paradox and it kind of is. as well as a headache.
the euro was to improve the functioning of the internal market which had been in development since WW2 ended.
but yes, there is no harmonisation in terms of regional economies. in some ways the problems in relation to the euro are caused by the things that the people who want the euro disbanded want. if that makes any sense.....................

i never understood it too.
in fact, i'm a dick at these matters but it looks to me that with the Euro you concentrate the exchange in one central bank only. Which saves the consumer and profits the EU ?
- Witt0
and as the relative weight of currency is by the amount of transactions in stock, having 1 single coin is best.

well, single currency as it is it's not just eliminating a the lira, peseta, franc and so on. it means a joined monetary politicy, economic aims, etc. it is very, very difficult to get this done: for example, so far interest rates are too low, which means the economy in some countries (spain, for example) is overheated. low interests mean the "value" of money is cheap, and that's needed, on the other hand, for bigger countries like france or germany to get things going (they're in a low moment now). so... if they keep this low interest rates, there's risk of local inflation in spain, but it's ok cos it'll take france and germany out of recesion.
it's very complex.
oh, and regarding your comment... that's something that can't be changed: you can't expect to get paid the same in london and leeds, cos the living expenses aren't the same (housing, eating, etc.). and that doesn't mean at all that london and leeds should have different currencies.

They are only 'signifiers' for an abstract concept anyway!
