it's better than mp3. it's an open source file that compresses better than mp3.

but what is it played with? itunes and quicktime do not read it...

u can import it into any audio program and then export as mp3 if you'd like

vlc plays it.. or you can download a plugin to get itunes work with it.

Convert it using Sony Sound Forge for PC or Soundtrack/Garageband for Mac.
When converting you do lose quality.

Found this little apple when I had the same questions. It converts .ogg to mp3's (mac) with ease. Pay attention to the parameters you can set for the quality etc..
