Why sigma over canon, nikon, pentax, and konica-minolta?

because of the foveon sensor

I know, but what do you expect from it? Just because it's different doesn't make it better.
Also, the lens choice is limited.
I never had a SD10 in my hands, but for this price I would opt for a Canon D20 or a Minolta D7D. I took some shots at a club concert with my friend's D7D recently, the AF speed and accuracy in low light and big viewfinder really surprised me. This paired with its antishock feature makes me think of minolta and can't wait till they release D5D (announcement expected soon).
Everyone has different needs, but I don't really see any real advantages of SD10 over competition.
It gives very sharp images, but they're only 3.4MP. If you downsize a not-as-sharp 8MP image to 3 MP it will get this sharp.

i was hoping someone knew about the faveon sensor, but it seems no one does. 10.2 megapixel images the same filesize as 3.4 megapixel images, not the same image quality. that's the whole difference between the SG10 and a canon 20d, my friend just got a canon, another friend of mine has the sigma.

Did you try comparing pics from those cameras brought to one resolution? I wonder what the result would be. Of course, quality of lens used matters too.
What kind of photography are you going to use it for? Studio, street, concert, wedding, press? And then, what will you do with the output? Print, print hi-res, use digitally? All this matters when picking your equipment.
I agree, the pics sharpness is outstanding and I guess their next sensor will be a killer.

well, if you look at my earlier photography, that's what ill most likely be doing. i really dig this foveon sensor. i have some pics somewhere from it. they should be on one of those links.
