What's the best way to do this without ripping up the plastic?

They use a screw driver though. That involves too much plastic abuse.

if you order a battery they give you little vinyl tools.

2 guitar plectrums
cut em both in half
wedge 2 either side ( squeeze ipod gently opens up a gap )
push down and it just pops off

i ordered a battery from them and the "tool" was just a little flathead screwdriver. i opened it up and the battery works great but it did do a little cosmetic damage to the edge. I sanded it smooth with sandpaper.

i told you so!
that plastic screwdriver was hard to use, but it did get the job done.
