i find that there is always a boy band the generation.
not to compare Temptations to Backstreetboys, but there have been a boy band. but i guess the difference in the fast food / image driven culture, and past is that people actually had talent (write own songs, play instruments, actually sing).
in my generation there were New Kids on the Block, Back Street boys, nsync.
but even now i still find the boy bands in the 70s 80s more substance.
I think introduction of NKOB really degraded the boy band scene due to their lack of talent.

In all seriousness, I used to be a Backstreet Boys/ Spice Girls fan in middle school (not NSYNC though). My friends and I would pretend to be each of the Spice Girls. I was always Baby Spice because I was the youngest and I'm short. I don't look anything like her though. Anyway, I also had these BSB cards...you know...the collectible ones in metallics and stuff. From the good ol' days.
In the 90's there were NKOTB, 'NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees, B2K, O-Town, LFO.
The new boy bands are more likely to resemble Good Charlotte, My Chemical Romance, Sum 41, Simple Plan or Dashboard Confessional.

I once had this NKOTB biography book (don't ask) and I found it in the basement the other day. It was the lamest shit ever. Like..."Donnie used to smoke, but he got out of the stinky habit. Because smoking is bad. Yay Donnie." And another page was "Joey had to sing really high in the earlier songs. Now he can't sing so high anymore".

I agree with jaline. the new boys band are all those stupid ""punk rock"" bands. they all sound the same and their fans are all 12 yeard old girls.
BUT, if i had a little daughter i would prefer she listen to Sum41 or Simple Plan and not Spears or Aguilera.
If kids can start loving electric guitars and rock n' roll with those bands, then i say yes! But i hope they will try to discover real stuff when they get older... like starting to listen to pink floyd, sabbath and the sex pistols when they get 18 years old.
