agree with fresno.

The style doesn't seem very representative of the books. I'd go with something darker.

Haven't read the other posts but...
If I were a reader of this guys books I would be really bored and unenthused by this site. It's just dull and boring.
I don't mean "add more bells and whistles" just improve the colour scheme and style to suit the authors.
Have you read any of his books?

do you have to use that bg color, it makes the blue for the tabs look horrid

He might very well be "fascinated by folklore, myths and legends", but the first thing he said to me was " I want a really simple, plain site"

jevad... not saying this is the case, but a lot of times the client will say that and mean something else.
ie.
client "Yeah, you know, I just was something plain, simple... nothing big"
translation "Yeah, you know, I don't want to pay much for this website. How's $50 and some left over halloween candy sound?"
But I agree with the other comments. Since the site is author specific, it should be styled around the artist, as would any other artist related site.
Just a thought - if the budget can be stretched, maybe see if you can work with the person who does his book illustrations to come up with some original graphics for the site? Perhaps base it around something popular in one of the books?

I don't like the book covers. I assume that he wanted them used, so I might as well fart into the wind.

1. There is no budget - this a favour for a friend.
2. He DOESN'T WANT a stylised website!! I tried that on teh first one - and this is what it ended up as:
Plain, simple....that's how he wants it. I'm not gonna argue with him...I just want to make it a little better than it currently is.

tell him to get a new cover artist

the one he has now is straight, he wants a new one?
