I like the older versions. Sorry probebly not what you want to hear. I usually like the first concept that you produce dude.

maybe try a version using a strong colour from the hearder graphic for the nav and left bit. Not diggin the colour combo.
needs some 'pop'

:)

agreed... with fate
- slappy0
agree with fate. having said number 2 is good so its not all the way back to the drawing board...

bucking follocks
I kinda liked the new direction
thanks for the comments though - I'm gonna run with this new one and see where it goes....

i just dont get the blue vertical bar on the left, what does it do?
if if was pretty typography or something it might make more sense (to me anyway)
- jevad0
it frames the content
hey don;t get me wrong I am the biggest supporter or white space...but there's just so much of it in #2
Also it will frame ou the menu a bit more too
I agree that blue is the wrong colour so I am going to investigate further colour treatments and knock up a couple other pages over the next day or so.
Then if I come back and you still tell me it's shite I'll scrap it and go with 2
: )

I like the new one with the space on the left but it feels more traditional.

jevad, I like the first of the older versions better than the new one you have.

wow, after reading through the responses, i don't feel like a dick for thinking the first round was nicer.
what about one of the older layouts with some kind of funky textured background? something quaint that suits an author perhaps? tho this is a sci-fi writer, so maybe quaint isn't the direction? But you'd cut down the negative space by boxing it in with a contrasting background, right?
imo, the problem with the new navigation is that it looks very rigid and structurally sound but lacks jevad flair. i like the gradients because they create dimension.
the image vertical size reduction seems to work well.

Looking at the book covers I might try to make it carzier and cheesier but fun still and tight.

are these books publishes as paperbacks? if so i think the site should have more scuff marks. maybe break out the dirty/scratchy brushes and scuff some white into the corners like a paperback.

"He is fascinated by folklore, myths and legends, and the history and diversity of other cultures, particularly those of the Far East."
Thats from his website.
Your website is very plain, boring and uninventive. Folklore, myths, and legends are not. You should actually design something based around the author, not throw on a template as it appears. Theres some great inspirtion in myths and legends. use it.
