why is my creative director less creative than the measly designer? Being me?
- mg330
Because he's got an Eames chair at home, and you don't.

He didn't ever aspire to be a designer, he aspired to be a creative director...

He's dealt with clients too long and is turning into one himself.

there's a geeky star wars metaphor somewhere in this.

why?
because he have to sell all the shit you make to the client which eats up all his creativity

he has to answer for you. your execs burn him for it, you client burns him for it. And shit floats down.
Up to your CD how he does his job, ours at least finds a diplomatic and subjective way to explain why your creativity is not desired on a certain type of project. While Art Directors can roam within the borders of creativity, it is the CD who needs to keep it within the much smaller borders of budget, agency politics, client expectation and demand, brand strategies and marketing objectives. And then some.
He is most likely bitching about your lack of vision in those departments. Each his own bro...
