I am wondering if any of NTers plays piano?
I am considering getting a digital piano. I'd love to be able to play jazz piano eventually. I am just starting out now and thinking this would be a good hobby. Any suggestions?

I can play

how good, JazX?
I can play very little. It's shame that my mother was a piano teacher and I never took a lesson in my life. Now at this age, I need to start from the very bottom...

are you eventualy going to make electronic music(controlling your keyboard or synthesiser through software on your computer)?
I would suggest a keyboard that has weighted keys...simillar to a real piano. make sure there are MIDI connections. this will let you expand your set up for future equipment. id be happy to help you in more depth..just email me.

My roommate studies jazz at ntnu, plays piano
This is what he uses for now

This isnt a keyboard, but an actual electronic piano

cool, thanks.
i've been looking at that yamaha. it's got all i need. i've been also looking at some Roland and Korg digital pianos.
From what i know, the key weight really makes a huge difference. Most of keyboards are so light it feels like playing with a toy.
hotreport,
does your roommate have any cons and pros on that yamaha?oh well, i need to think about this some more.

Worst joke ever...
'I can play piano by ear'...
'Thats nothing! My brother can fiddle with his willy'

Biggest regret was giving it up at 16. 10 years on and I can play just about fuck all. Would love to start again but keyboards just don't do it and actual pianos are big expensive bastards.

that bulgarian chick who played those kind of quick nintento tunes on a trange mounted synthesizer, what was her website again?

ok, i am a piano player, and please please please don't make the same mistake that i did
do NOT buy a digital piano, even with weighted keys; it just doesn't have the soul of an actual piano
if you have the space, the money, and the patience of your family and neighbors, there is NOTHING close to the real thing.
i bought a digital piano, and with commensurate practice, my playing has actually declined.
good luck! think big

i got a pretty decent ivers & pond upright a few years back for under 2k... i love it. one of those digital ones is going to run around the same (or more) i would think.

hmmm, that's what i was afraid to hear. so in your opinion, digital piano doesn't meet up the expectation of actual piano?
i don't have space and i can't afford the noise complains. i need to go to a store and test out a digital piano.

I play piano - I actually trained initally as a classical pianist. Throughout music college, I had a very basic Yamaha keyboard that didn;t have weighted keys. It was really good for much except practicing fingering.
These days you can get really amazing electronic piano instruments that are a fraction of the size of the real thing and don't sound half as bad.
Best thing to do is visit a local specialist music store - not a high street retailer - they'll usually guide you through all the things you'd need to consider.
I love playing piano but the really good money gigs are sporadic hence why I then switch to design for my Masters because I could get a salaried job 'easier'. Will go back to it again in about 10 years when the desire/need to make money isn't so crucial.
good luck.

sorry I meant to say: It was really "not" good for much except practicing fingering.
