I play piano - I actually trained initally as a classical pianist. Throughout music college, I had a very basic Yamaha keyboard that didn;t have weighted keys. It was really good for much except practicing fingering.
These days you can get really amazing electronic piano instruments that are a fraction of the size of the real thing and don't sound half as bad.
Best thing to do is visit a local specialist music store - not a high street retailer - they'll usually guide you through all the things you'd need to consider.
I love playing piano but the really good money gigs are sporadic hence why I then switch to design for my Masters because I could get a salaried job 'easier'. Will go back to it again in about 10 years when the desire/need to make money isn't so crucial.
good luck.
