Thats why you need a union. There is something wrong with long hours culture.
------------------------------
true that soda.for me personally the design culture feels stronger than the union culture. i would feel REALLY BAD if i missed a deadline.
whereas the designers who went on strike happen to be the ones who always leave at 5.30, if you know what i mean.

the sad thing is I agree with both vespa and chimp. we work in a culture that expects/demands we work long hours (and we are pretty willing a lot of the time to work the longer hours... especially on the big, prestigous jobs) that doesn't make it right though. I think sometimes we are our own worst enemies... justifying working these hours because 'we have to' and 'no one else is going to do it' and we end up being the ones stuck in the office half the night while those less dedicated/stupid instead go home and have a life.
I am saying this as someone who was working till four this morning and had to be up at 8 so I'm probably ranting at myself!!

Yep, right on Soda. I dont mind working hard on something as long as its worth while. But then you have to is why is it like this?
- vespa0
i just don't identify with the jobsworths who go home at 5.30 and have 1 hour lunch breaks every day and don't work out how to fix a problem because it's "not part of their remit".
Doesn't mean i agree with producers taking the piss (like last friday's late "emergency") but i'll always finish what needs to be done because i like to take pride in my work, even if it means working late sometimes.
i do have a life tho, honest!

heh, I wasn't having a go Vespa, I'm in the same boat. Always the people who take pride and go the extra mile get shat on from a great height.
There has to be a time when you can come in, get the work done in your regular hours, get paid, be proud of it, have a lunch break AND go home and have a life!

....of course that would mean giving up the NT too...

Yeah soda you cunt!! To be fair, you were saying pretty much what I tried to say earlier but everyone freaked out about me saying nigger.
Anyway, yeah, working hours. First thing I had to do when I started here was to sign away my right to a maximum of 48 hours in a week. Was that or no job, which is wrong. But only if its abused.
Its not really about working hours at the beeb though is it? Is it not about a lack of consultation regarding the mass redundancy?
- soda0
yeah skt it's a different issue that I hijacked I guess, I'm all for striking and standing up for your rights and the rights of your fellow worker. Just not sure if I could do it in Vespa's position...knowing she had a deadline and no one else would do it, meaning she would have to make up the hours in anycase.
I think we get pretty dicked when it comes to our working rights. And don't get me started on free-fecking-pitching....
