    the truth is that people need someone to identify with and someone to feel distinct from. It's natural. You said it yourself. The Cool vs the Un-Cool. But people change and those who are Cool now may get Un-Cool shortly.

    Learning to be tolerant to those who we don't like so much is what we need to learn.

    I wonder if we really NEED to feel distinct, or if we just want to. It is easier for us to look at other groups and feel like they are the cause of the problem becuase then it gets us off the hook from doing what we have to do. If we can write off all Europeans, or all Americans, or all black people, then it is easier to figure out the world and our place in it. It is much harder to realize everywhere and everygroup has good and bad and we have to give everyone the benefit of the doubt until we have meet and understood them.

    Witt- I do agree with your overall point, my initial comment was obviously too simplistic and idealistic. However, I still hold to my original point in that nationalism in an online community is ironic.
