Apparently this guy was getting pissed off with the noise his PC made so he dumped it in a tank of vegetable oil...

I appreciate that that is really geeky and sad - but that truly does rock!
- shutdown0
you want fries with that?
- tomkat0
how could that work?
- Nairn0
why wouldn't it?
- chossy0
all the electricity would it not start to 'fry' some of the power source?.
- Kiko0
huh!!!
is this a joke?
how does it work doesnt it short circuit or something?
- Hym0
oil is NOT a conductor
actually it's not new oil is often used as industrial cooling but not in a fish tank obviously, the ideal setup would be in a metal case with cooling fins to increase the surface in contact with air to help keeping the oil cooleverything should work except harddisks and other disc drives
- chossy0
groovy :D bit daft though do you think the guy has the crazy?

I understand the concept of oil as a coolant (to eliminate the fan and have a silent computer). What I dont understand is why he submerged his entire computer in a massive tank of oil... why not build a small oil filled enclosure for just the cpu? like a an oversized oilsink or something that fastenes around it. Cos theres really no benifit in oiling anything other than the cpu.

he should read up on heat sinks
....less messy
- Nairn0
Ease, I'd imagine - it'd be fiddly as fuck trying to make a homemade oil sink for just the CPU.
Besides, if I had his ken I'd have tried it 'just because i can'.
Dang, I'm only half the geek I want to be!

- Nairn0
Uuuh.. Yeah. Right.
Thanks, index000.
Cool, 'I have girlfriends'.
*sob.
- Nairn0
omg.
i've just realised (i'm hungover, and really slow today) that we've got about 12 aquariums downstairs and 4 old junked computers... ohmy...
...heady heights of überGeekdom, here we come!
- index0000
I take back what I said about girlfriends...

wtf, and it still functions or is he taking a piss here
- ricstultz0
someone has far too much time on their hands....
for 1 - how do you move/relocate an oil soaked computer?
for 2 - how do upgrade an oil soaked computer?
both would be intensely messy operations and not worth the benefit of a quiet computer.
- tomkat0
it smells.
