They followed a brilliant performance by the Flaming Lips, who I don't even care for that much, on Austin City Limits.
They were awful and the guy's voice sucks. Should have been the other way around, them playing before legends like the Flaming Lips.
Wayne Coyne stopped the beginning of BS's War Pigs to pause and poor fake blood on his hair and face for chrissakes!

Probably the altitude...

The first time I heard them was on an American Eagle DVD/CD, which I received with my (clothing) purchase around 1.5 years ago.
They're pretty good. Hmm...they may be very commercialized in the States, but most of the music lovers I know don't know much about them. Maybe b/c I'm in Canada? And anyone who does know them here discovered them through Garden State.

i've seen them live a few years back and they were awesome back then. actually i liked them more than modest mouse, who they were opening for.
due to their sound, it's probably more difficult to please audience in large venue. nevertheless, i love james mercer (just as much as i love zach braff and ben gibbard).

Jaline.. hmmmm no, can't agree with your Garden State comment; i'm in Canada and have been loving the Shins for a few years (since the 1st album Oh, Inverted World), and long before that horrible film.

not everyone...just most of the people i hang out with. maybe i'm with a 'not-in-the-loop' crew?

Oh my god I agree with jevad!!! I saw them in NYC few weeks ago and it was snooze fest. Every song they played was just like off their cds, very predictable. Play song. Song ends. Audience claps. They waited until the second to last song to jam for an extended minute or so woo hoo.
Album is great. Their songs are very clever and likable, however, seeing them live they sucked. One of my WORST concerts as well.

Live music should always be like Muse or Placebo, who sock you right in the privates!

I think a good indication of how good/bad your show is is how much reaction you get from teh crowd. Last night I think I saw *maybe* 3 or 4 small groups moving around...I mean I know they aren't fucking Earth Crisis or anything but nobody was even singing along....

There are some bands who get so much praise and cheering in a certain town, compared to others. One of my favourite bands just remarked the other month how the crowd over here sucks and never claps at the end of their songs, whereas almost every other towns' citizens cheer. I was upset when I heard that, because I know the band is amazing.
Maybe the crowd was on downer drugs?
