I'm weighing up the pros and cons of buying Tiger for my G4 dual 1Ghz but I read on here somewhere that it ran quite sluggish on a G4, anyone else have any experience with this OS on a similar Mac? Please let me know - cheers.

That was total bs - it runs like a shag on silk blankets! Very cool stuff. (on PB G4)

PB G4 ?
- jox0
Yeah, at first it was all warm and moist but then it got all *cold* and moist so I got up.
PB G4 = Powerbook G4 (which is my internet computer online machine)

what processor and Ram you got in your powerbook?
- honest0
tiger wants 250mb of ram minimum. i always wait a few months for the bugs to get patched before buying. mind you, it:s the cheapest os they've released for a while.

Yeah but won't Apple give you the auto updates to fix any bugs?
- jox0
800 / 768

Who ever told you that either is liying or doesnt have enough ram.
I recommend you install Tiger ASAP! Its great, better features and it feels snappier.
I have a PB G4 and it runs like a dream. More RAM the better.
When you do install it make sure you do an Archive Install and not an Upgrade. Upgrade just replaces the necessary files in your system folder. Archive Install renames your old system folder and installs a clean one. You can also start from scratch and do a full erase and install. Either is fine just dont do an Upgrade.
Also after you install it download Cocktail, its a system maintenance app that does a bunch of great stuff. Most important it repairs your permissions.
If you have Photoshop CS installed and you do the Archive Install you need to do a quick fixed afterwards do that PS works properly. Check out this link and you will see what Im talking about. All you need to do is move one file from your old system folder to your new one.

For that dude who said hes going to wait for Apple to get the bugs out before he install Tiger, I have one question. WHY???
Sure there are bugs but there are always bugs. The bugs in Tiger are very minimal and dont effect the user flow. Install it and stop waiting. I never understood why people think that way cause every build has bugs. Its part of the software world.
Good luck with the install.

nah bro, upgrade
do u have any idea how fast my powerbook starts up now !! :)
no more waiting forever
its a huge inporovement from my point of view

i find Tiger slow.. i got 512 on 12' pb
its the cheapest cause its not a new fresh OS, its just an update version.
funny when Microsoft does it, its bad but when apple does it its fucken good
- Bureau0
stream,
its slow caue you need more RAM. 512 is the minimum reccomended amount. Get yourself another 512 and you will see that Tiger will fly!

if you can, back up everything, and do an erase and install, that way you are working off a clean slate. But yes, one good thing about Tiger, my PB starts up super fast now.
- blackspade0
yes u should
having said that i backed up nothing and just went for it
im lazy, but one day i will pay
- Bureau0
Archive Install is installing a clean system as well. The only thing is you get to keep your Apps and Your User folder.
- Nac0
The reason i like to do it clean is if your library preferences for your apps is holding any shite....i like to wipe out the mess, just to make sure its clean, reinstall the apps, and its like wearing a new pair of underwear......refreshing.

I agree, I use to do that all the time. But Ive been lazy recently and the thought of reinstalling all my apps make me want to vomit.

my PB is clean. there is no apps installed in it.
cause its so slow so that i cant work on anything except surf the web for it.
yes i have formatted it now 19 times.
i dont feel that the processor is slow that its not worth spending the extra money to get the ram.
mind you my dual G5 is lighting fast. but still slower than my pc.

dotn get me wrong.
i love the Tiger, its very nice APP not so much an OS.
