you might want to take a look at that flat before hitting the trail. :)
can you double on that thing?
- 5timuli0
Yup, still undecided! I can get either at roughly the same price so it's all down to performance and recommendations now.
Haven't ridden the RM but have tried the Orange (although not for anything technical). Bike shops in Edinburgh haven't got much to offer in that way.
I suppose the advantage of the RM is the f/r lockouts which'll be good for the commute to work but I still need something that can handle a whole lot of shit if it needs to.
Good trails are only a short drive outside Edinburgh and I've heard the Orange is well suited to British riding but since I'm (hopefully) moving to Canada in the next couple of years I want something suitable.

suspension for anything but a true downhill bike blows chow!
after you install shocks you should get some biospace chainrings.
It's pretty easy to change your center of gravity on a bike, making suspension a useless downgrade. Unless you are really ripping downhills they are wack.
All suspension front and rear robs your drivetrain of energy...POGO...POGO...POGO...th... the shock sapping your power every time you stand up to hammer. Thats the bad 'mechanics' I was refering to.
On the other hand if you really want it and it makes you ride more then people like me should piss off....

Hey mitsu, that is one bad-ass x-country rig. Must be a dream on the climbs, like a road bike yeah?
- ********0
sweet mitsu...if it only had a rigid fork and thumbshifters
- Mimio0
Nice tonx,
Using the slop on your old thumbshifters for an 8speed cassette?
- mitsu0
it's actually kind of awkward with climbs... it's so light, it just kind of wants to stand on its rear paws...
but it handles technical trails like no other bike i've ridden

7 speed thumbies have a 'phantom' click and they work really well with an 8 speed cassette. Shimano also made 8 speed thumbies with a 'phantom' click for a 9 speed cassette.
I didn't really understand the 'slop' part, but I don't think you know what you are talking about either.

you need a shock under that seat. that seat would tear my hemeroids apart.

Im saving to get this one

Today I ride an upgraded scott voltage 4 but I'm already destroying it
- mitsu0
yeah, i'm looking for a replacement seat, but it needs to be light. the one i have is the lightest model i could find - also the most uncomfortable :/
- Mimio0
tonx, that's what I meant by slop the old deore style shifters have any extra indexing.
- Mimio0
mistu what's the bike weight like 18 lbs?
- BZZZP0
as long as we're on bikes, i'd like tto reiterate how much mtn bikes blow for anything but *mountain biking*
for general shit, you can't beat something like:
http://www.irocycle.com/fixedgea…
(fixie-faschism aside, or maybe just get iro to add a flipflop hub)but since the pigs don't make it in a 66cm, i made my own:
and it makes me *happy*
- mitsu0
i haven't weighed it yet, but it's probably close to that compared to my specialized rock hopper alum. frame which is low 20's.
- Mimio0
Enough of this retro-grouch fixed gear shit. Do you put your foot in the fork inplace of brakes too?
- BZZZP0
yes.
no, in fact i like fixed *sometimes* only insofar as it makes me a saner (because more thoughtful) biker.
i go 2x as fast with brakes, and when i get around to getting some disc brake mounts welded on (or a new frame) i will be a downright liability...
so yeah, fixed just makes you ride your worth, or pay dearly. i prefer brakes and coasting myself.
- e_b_c0
tonx
when is the last time you rode a FS bike? Hell, my buddies stupid M5 is acutally pretty nice. and if specialized can make a good FS bike, then nearly anyone can.
- ********0
mimio...sorry I thought you were insulting me, and while there are plenty of reasons to do that my knowledge [read:dork] of thumbshifters is not one of them.
e_b_c: I rode one within the last week. pogo-pogo-pogo
